Beta Upsilon Chi is preparing to fight for their right to grill once again at their first Pigskin Revue performances.
Last semester, BYX took first place and warmed both grills and hearts at All-University Sing. Now, with their Pigskin performance almost underway, BYX is reflecting on their last performance and gearing up to take the stage again.
San Antonio senior Robert Gulley, BYX president, said that winning Sing showed BYX that they can find success.
“Winning Sing meant a lot to our guys,” Gulley said. “It showed us that we could have a great time, follow Jesus relentlessly, but still see a success on this campus.”
Even as BYX prepares for Pigskin, their focus on God remains the same.
“Moving forward presented a new challenge: what does it look like to succeed with humility and a complete pass off of that success to God?” Gulley said. “Heading into Pigskin our mindset is one thing, continue to have an amazing time, while not allowing the pressure of Pigskin to take us off our purpose and path, honoring God.”
Gulley said the Pigskin practices have been a bonding experience.
“The opportunity to hang out with your best friends every single day, have fun and dance until you’re exhausted is one of the greatest memories I’ll have ever made in college,” Gulley said. “They leave every single day having grown closer together and it is just so awesome.”
In preparation for Pigskin, BYX has been working and practicing, pushing through learning curves and growing their brotherhood. Pantego senior Miles McCavit, BYX Sing chair, said that the setbacks have brought BYX closer together.
“The practice has been hard, but good,” McCavit said. “It’s definitely been a learning curve, but overall, the BYX guys have grown closer through this experience, and I can tell that putting on such a fun act has been a highlight for so many of them this semester.”
For BYX’s recent success, Gulley and McCavit point to God as the main force behind it all.
“I want people to know that not for one second do we think any of this success is because of our own doings,” Gulley said. “Without the Lord we wouldn’t even be on this campus.”
“None of this would be possible for BYX without the amazing power of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ,” McCavit said. “Because of him, we have the amazing joy inside that spills out onto the stage.”
According to McCavit, viewers should expect laughter and fun from BYX’s performance.
“Get ready to have so much fun watching this act,” McCavit said. “It is a rollercoaster of emotions, but overall, we love being silly and making others laugh.”
