Game day brings a sea of green and gold fashion, from bright gold Baylor Line jerseys, green wigs and large yellow hats to dresses and cowboy boots. One outfit, however, is spreading through the student section, covering students in school spirit from shoulders to shins: green-and-gold-striped overalls.
University-themed overalls were popularized when Game Bibs Inc. was founded in 2003, providing a standard company to create and sell these overalls at retailers. Now Baylor students get their overalls from a variety of places, including the Baylor Bookstore, Amazon and their friends.
Sacramento, California, junior Katie Smith said she first spotted overalls on a mannequin.
“I thought, dang, that looks cool,” Smith said. “And I started seeing people posting them, and I was like, I love the striped look.”
Now Smith said she wears her overalls whenever she gets the chance.
“I feel very spirited when I wear them,” Smith said.
When it comes to school spirit, other students shared similar sentiments.
Jupiter, Florida, sophomore Josh Gould said wearing the overalls helps boost the power of the student section, regardless of the crowd.
“There’s not enough people at these games, so we got to get the spirit going,” Gould said.
Glen Ellyn, Illinois, senior Micah Johnson said the overalls provide spirit that other outfits might not.
“I think polos are a little too nonchalant,” Johnson said. “I think we got to be hype and we have to be chalant.”
Argyle sophomore Iker Estrada and Wilsonville, Oregon, junior Jack Lubisich both said they wear their overalls to support the team and even to influence the outcome of the game.
“[We’re] trying to get hyped and loud and help turn the tide of the game a little bit towards Baylor’s favor,” Lubisich said.
For Baylor fans interested in joining the overall crowd, green-and-gold striped overalls can be purchased from the Baylor Bookstore under the name “Baylor University Game Bibs Overalls” for $70. The overalls are unisex and come in sizes ranging from XS to 3XL. Game Bibs brand overalls are also available at Dick’s Sporting Goods for $69.95, Rally House for $69.99, on Amazon for $79.95 and directly from the Game Bibs website for $69.95.
