Humanity has always carried the memory of its past. Legends, songs of heroes, tales and the stories your mom and dad told you with barely hidden smiles when recollecting their glory days.

Understanding the men and women who defined our world and these stories leads us to wonder how they came to be. Unsurprisingly, the wide majority of human beings do not speak one language. Thank the folks at Babel for that. Whatever language or dialect you do speak, there is one thing that reigns as the ultimate superpower. It is the word, Yes.

‘Yes’ is the basis for everything we do. We make hundreds of decisions everyday. Some of them are important, like saying yes to moving thousands of miles away to a new college, or to trying a new Whataburger order. Some of them are small, but nonetheless, we have to say yes to a lot of things in our lives, and as life is causal, so are the impacts of what we say yes to.

Think about every single time you’ve had something good in your life that has happened by your volition. Every story that you can look back and laugh at. All the times you made best friends and moved on from hard places. The new job that you accepted, even the decision that brought you to this very university to read my awful opinion piece.

You said yes to all of these things. You said yes to chasing your dreams, to making those new friends, to chasing a higher education where you could secure your future by your own hands.

Now, it’s worth noting that you should not say yes to everything. You should not say yes to drinking and driving, or hurting people for whatever reason, or doing other things that are generally considered transgressions against the moral and legal codes of both man and God.

With that disclaimer out of the way, embrace the power of yes. Give yourself the opportunity and the courage to be free. Even science unsurprisingly states that giving yourself options and exploring new opportunities make life more fulfilling.

Allow yourself to say yes to all that you can, and to fill your life with joy and all the new things that you have accepted. Say yes to new friends, say yes to that outing that you were afraid to go to, say yes to studying hard, say yes to loving others and loving God. Say yes to yourself. Say yes to a life worth living.
