Many freshmen come to Baylor with the excitement of knowing they have a fresh start to build a strong grade point average, while others may dread it. However, Baylor offers a multitude of resources to help ease students’ stress across all majors and activities as soon as they arrive on campus.

According to the Office of the Provost, a student’s GPA is calculated by dividing the total number of points earned by the number of credits applied toward the GPA.

In order to maintain scholarship eligibility and academic standing, plan for graduation and register for fraternity and sorority recruitment, Baylor students are required to obtain specific GPAs.

Ridgeland junior Grace Miller said she juggles being a member of Greek Life, an office assistant and a part of the Honors College by not asking too much of herself.

“I think the best way to balance it all is to stay on top of your schedule and to have friends who keep you accountable and make it all exciting,” Grace Miller said.

Students continue to exceed expectations set by the university every semester. As stated in a press release the student body achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.27 last spring, while the athletic department finished with a 3.30.

The athletic department had seven of their 19 programs record their best spring term GPA in May. Those seven programs were acrobatics and tumbling, baseball, equestrian, women’s cross country, soccer and men’s and women’s track and field.

Placentia junior Haley Mustafa, a member of the acrobatics and tumbling team, said the athletic department provides a sufficient amount of academic resources. Freshmen are required to have six hours of study time documented.

“Last semester as a sophomore, I wasn’t required to have any [study] hours, but I chose to have two tutors for classes I knew I was going to struggle with,” Mustafa said, “I didn’t want to risk it, so I got help right away.”

As an environmental studies major, Mustafa prioritizes her coursework by seeking out resources while still being a committed member of a national championship team.

Students who successfully work toward a minimum GPA of 3.70 in at least 12 credit hours are honored on the Dean’s List each semester. In the spring, over 4,700 students met this achievement.

The University Advisement Center provides a GPA calculator online to help students set goals in their classes throughout the semester. For additional information, visit Paul L. Foster Success Center.
