As part of the Lariat staff, we are allowed to go to different conventions throughout the year. I was able to go to the College Media Awards in New York City over Spring Break. Not only were the sessions really helpful, but also we got to go out and see the city. The places I went to included: the Disney Store, Chinatown, Little Italy, Bubba Gump Shrimp Co., Times Square and If/Then the Musical. Some other really cool things that happened in New York were that my photo was featured on the New York Times Upshot and I won the onsite photo competition.
I’m not that great of a writer, which is why I am the Photo Editor, so I’m going to show you New York through my photos.
Times Square in New York City is just as impressive during the day as it is at night. There’s nothing quite like the hustle and bustle of the city.People dressed up in all sorts of outfits in Times Square including the Statue of Liberty on stilts. Other costumes included Minnie Mouse, Captain America and Spiderman.The streets of New York City were packed with the locals and tourists.I had to stop for a quick picture in Times Square to document my time in New York City.We found the Disney store! Caroline, Hannah and I had so much fun looking at everything in the Disney store on our first day in New York City.Street vendors were everywhere! They sold all sorts of pictures from framed prints to spray painted pictures of the city.Going into the Hershey store was a must. As a chocolate lover, I couldn’t pass up going into a store dedicated to chocolate.Of all the stores in Little Italy, Rae and I were very surprised to find a Christmas store that was open year round.One of the coolest things about New York was the number of murals painted in the city. Each one was unique like this alien riding a motorcycle.Another mural that caught my attention was a ship mural. The artist obviously put a lot of work and detail into his or her painting.The famous 1960s actress Sophia Loren was spray painted on a Little Italy wall by Lexi Bella.This was my award winning photo from the CMA convention called I ART NEW YORK. Artist Lexi Bella spray paints Sophia Loren, a famous Italian-French movie star during the 1960s and 1970s, on a wall in Little Italy. The painting is part of the Little Italy Street Art Project which is trying to preserve Little Italy culture and to provide Manhattan with a mural district.Chinatown had lots of stores full of souvenirs, and they also sold food including freshly cooked meats.I knew I was going to Chinatown to shop and see the sights, but I didn’t know I would also experience the smells of Chinatown including the fresh fish market.A woman grabs some grapes for a customer in Chinatown. Chinatown is full of small stores that sell everything from souvenirs to food.The street muscians of the subway were really great and left me with a lasting impression of Chinatown.Although this is a total cliche picture, I had to take it to show that I took a subway.My favorite part of my trip was this musical. If/Then featuring Idina Menzel was one of the best musicals I have ever seen.My photo was featured in a slideshow on the New York Times Upshot last Thursday while I was in New York.
