Baylor overcame an early first half scare to defeat Northwestern State 88-54 Friday in the Lady Bears second game of the Athletes in Action Classic at the Ferrell Center.

“At halftime, I talked to them about their defense and how we didn’t play very good defense,” Baylor head coach Kim Mulkey said. “It was obvious when they were shooting a higher percentage than us from the field and we were missing too many free throws and we weren’t getting post touches.”

The No. 9 Baylor Lady Bears will put their 60-game home winning streak on the line with a three-game home stand for the Athletes in Action Classic at the Ferrell Center.

The three-day tournament will pit the Lady Bears against Savannah State today, Northwestern State Friday and UTSA Saturday.

“You get a lot of basketball,” Baylor head coach Kim Mulkey said. “You get to continue to see a lot of combinations. We’ll attack a lot of different defenses. I’m sure we’ll see a lot of zone, and we need to do that. We need to attack zones. We need to do a better job with rebounding.”

The Bears went 2-1 over the weekend with two wins against Appalachian State and Northwestern State before falling in the Baylor Invitational final against Colorado in straight sets.

Baylor won their first match of the weekend against Northwestern State 3-1 on Friday. The sets were 25-19, 25-17, 21-25 and 25-23.

The Bears played two matches in the Baylor Invitational on Friday, winning against both Northwestern State and Appalachian State.

The second match against Appalachian State on Friday night, winning in straight sets. They won sets 29-27, 25-20 and 25-15.

The win was their second win of the day, after beating Northwestern State University in their first match. The Bears record improved to 4-6 after Friday’s matches, while Appalachian State falls to 6-3.

Baylor volleyball hosts the 2013 Baylor Invitational Tournament this weekend at the Ferrell Center. Baylor faces off against Northwestern State and Appalachian State today and then takes on Colorado on Saturday.

Northwestern State heads into the Baylor Invitational with a record of 1-6, with its sole loss coming against Prairie View A&M. Freshman outside hitter Ashley Elrod leads the team with a .206 hitting percentage and totals of 57 kills and 48 digs through 22 sets. The Lady Demons have a combined hitting percentage of .104 and allow opponents to hit .232 on the season.

The message of committee scoring was heard loud and clear by No. 10 Baylor on its way to a 5-0 win over Northwestern State on Sunday. Baylor was aggressive outshooting Northwestern State 34 to five.

The underclassmen are productive once again as freshman midfielder Ashley York set up sophomore forward Bri Campos for her second goal of the season with a cross from the left side of the box.

Goals were plentiful for Baylor’s women’s soccer team Sunday afternoon. The Lady Bears moved to 2-0 on the season with a 5-0 win over the Northwestern State Lady Demons. “I wanted to see maturity in my team,” head coach Marci Jobson said. “[We wanted] to be able to come out against a team that we should be able to beat. I think they did that.” The Lady Bears started the first half strong.
