The farmers market provides free produce and other goods to students. It started in 2017 to bring awareness on campus to students who live with food insecurities.
The idea first came from a partnership called the Big 12 Food Pantry Alliance, which seeks to fight food insecurity among the colleges in the Big 12 Conference. Texas Tech mostly accepted monetary donations, and Baylor’s food pantry received major support from students.
As part of National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, today the McLennan County Hunger Coalition and the Heart of Texas Homeless Coalition are asking people to donate to an all-day food drive that will take place at multiple locations, such as H-E-B, Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club locations.
The food will go to local food pantries.
Many children in McLennan County will go home from school Fridays and not eat a meal until Monday morning at school breakfast. Pack of Hope, a local non-profit organization, is fighting to put an end to such a situation.
“There are over 26,300 children in McLennan County who are eligible for free and reduced lunch,” said Jane Bounds, president and co-founder of Pack of Hope. She said most of these students go all weekend without food.
