While it may be allergy season, another time of year is quietly creeping in — kitten season. Typically spanning from early spring to late fall, kitten season marks a surge in feline births, leading to a significant influx of newborn kittens and mother cats at shelters and rescues.

To be exact, Pet Circle’s dog capacity is at 94%, and they’re currently taking in more dogs than are being adopted, with 59 intakes in the last seven days compared to just 41 adoptions in that same time period.

“What we can do is educate the people who aren’t on the campus and let them know,” she said. “We have some signage out that lets people know the cats are part of a monitored colony.”
The Humane Society of Central Texas has nearly 200 dogs waiting to be fostered and provides resources to set foster applicants up for success. Brooke Farrell, the Humane Society’s director of development and public relations, said that while foster parents may only be taking one dog under their wing, they are doing an act of service for other dogs at the shelter by decreasing the number on the at-risk list and freeing up a crate.
