Reviving an old Big 12 Conference competition, Baylor football is set to meet Colorado after a 14-year hiatus in the national limelight against Coach Prime. While head coach Deion Sanders’ Buffaloes have been on at prime time since he took over the program in 2023, the Bears have stumbled off the national stage.

The Baylor men’s basketball team was dead in the water only a few weeks ago. Even head coach Scott Drew, the eternal optimist, could not find a team that managed to make the NCAA Tournament after that poor a start. But after Baylor’s (20-10, 8-9) big time 74-61 win against No. 16 Iowa State (22-7, 10-7) in Waco, it may be impossible to leave the Bears out of March Madness.

Shehan Jeyarajah, sports writer for The Baylor Lariat, takes a look at each of the Big 12 teams playing this week and their opponents in a preview of week one of college football.

At one point this season, the Baylor baseball team was struggling with an 11-15 overall record and a 1-3 record in the Big 12. The outlook for the remainder of the season certainly did not seem optimistic, but a Baylor team with a history of success showed resiliency and is now in the hunt to defend its Big 12 Championship.

With the season winding down, the No. 15 Baylor Lady Bears are preparing to make a run for the NCAA Tournament. However, Baylor still needs to take care of business within the Big 12 Conference in order to gain favorable position for the end of the season.

Baylor (37-13, 8-6 Big 12) is currently third in the Big 12 behind Oklahoma and Texas.

Oklahoma and Texas hold the tiebreaker over Baylor due to series wins, so in the event of a tie, Baylor would lose out.

After four Big 12 contests, the Baylor Bears are still winless in the conference after Iowa State defeated the Bears 35-21 on Saturday. Now is the time for Baylor football to either sink or swim.

Seven games into the season, with a 3-4 record, some trends have become disturbing with this Baylor team. In all four of Baylor’s losses, the Bears are a combined minus-11 in turnover ratio. Aside from just the turnover ratio, the Bears have also failed to capitalize on golden opportunities and make the crucial plays down the stretch that generate victories.

The No. 8 Texas Longhorns outlasted the Baylor Bears in Austin 3-1 (25-18, 20-25, 25-9, 25-22). For the first time since 2006, the Baylor volleyball team won a set in Austin against the Texas Longhorns Tuesday evening.

By Daniel Hill Sports Writer The Baylor football team is at a pivotal moment in its season. A three game…

West Virginia: 12 of 15, 80 percent

TCU: 14 of 19, 73.68 percent

Big 12 Conference: 26 of 34, 76 percent

Kansas at Kansas State: This is a highly uneven Sunflower Showdown as No. 7 Wildcats host the Jayhawks in Manhattan. The Wildcats are coming off a monumental road win over Oklahoma and have won 12 straight home games. Conversely, the Jayhawks have lost an astounding 14 consecutive road contests. Kansas has had problems defending the rush, and the Wildcats will be too much for them with Collin Klein, and John Hubert will power the rushing attack to a Wildcats victory. Prediction: Kansas State 42, Kansas 10

Baylor @ West Virginia: This is by far the most difficult test the Bears will have faced this season. No. 9 West Virginia has a wildly raucous crowd in Morgantown, and the Bears will be forced to play an early game at 11 a.m. which will be a different experience for them this year. WVU quarterback Geno Smith has already thrown for 1,072 yards this season, and he has accounted for 13 touchdowns. The Mountaineers top offensive playmakers are Tavon Austin and Stedman Bailey, who have 10 total touchdowns and more than 600 yards receiving. Baylor counters with a high-octane offense of its own with Nick Florence spreading the ball to Tevin Reese and Terrance Williams. Ultimately, WVU will be an extreme test for the Bears. Prediction: West Virginia 55, Baylor 38

After last year’s fairy tale season with Heisman trophy winner Robert Griffin III, Baylor looks to make sure this season does not do a Humpty Dumpty fall.

The majority of Baylor’s track and field athletes were able to take Easter weekend off to relax and prepare for their next meet, a rejuvenation that should be to their advantage as they prepare to battle the relentless winds that seem to dictate meets in Lubbock.
