Julia Chinn and Mary Church Terrell entered the spotlight at “Biographies in Bold: Black Women & U.S. Systems of Power” Thursday afternoon. Award-winning authors Dr. Amrita Chakrabarti Myers and Dr. Alison Parker discussed their books about these women at 3:30 p.m. in Moody Memorial Library’s Schumacher Flex Commons.

In 1894, when a young Baylor student was sexually assaulted in the university president’s backyard, she was referred to as “that Brazilian girl.” Today, the name Antônia Teixeira is a symbol of resilience in the face of the institutional oppression which Baylor played a regrettable role in, according to a lecture in the Baylor Libraries Author Series.

The authors featured in this year’s panel were Dr. Greg Garrett, professor of English, and Dr. Robert Jones, president and founder of the Public Religion Research Institute.
