After an impressive night against Oklahoma State on Sunday, Mulkey said she likes the way the No. 7 Lady Bears (20-3, 10-1) rose in terms of confidence not just from her star players, but from her team as a whole in their past few games.

Last year, the Lady Bears lost someone many called the ultimate post player. Brittney Griner entered the 2013 WNBA draft, marking the end of an era, but the beginning of another in Baylor women’s basketball.

Lady Bears head coach Kim Mulkey admits she did not have a complete idea of how her team would do this season.

With only one returning starter and the majority of the current team being freshmen, Mulkey knew she needed a couple of players to step up for the team, regardless of their age or experience.

On Family Night at the Ferrell Center, fans were treated to a tightly contested rivalry game that saw No. 7 Baylor (18-3, 8-1) earn its league-leading eighth win in conference play against the Texas Longhorns in a 87-73 contest.

Baylor head coach Kim Mulkey knew her team would be challenged by Texas on the boards more than any team has all season, saying the Longhorns (14-7, 5-4) are possibly “the best rebounding team in the league.” The Lady Bears stood their ground early in the rebound battle. Texas edged out Baylor by a narrow 24-22 rebounding margin in the first half.

It was clear in the first few possessions that Texas Tech was going to be in an uphill battle against the No. 9 Lady Bears. Baylor handily defeated Texas Tech 92-43 at the Ferrell Center on Wednesday.

The Lady Bears (17-3, 7-1) started the half with poise, finding quality looks for senior guard Odyssey Sims, senior guard Makenzie Robertson and freshman forward Nina Davis throughout the half.

Coming off a big road victory against Oklahoma State, Baylor jumps back into conference play against Texas Tech at 7 p.m. today at the Ferrell Center.

Although Tech’s record (6-13, 0-8) may indicate it is an inferior team to Baylor (16-3, 6-1), the Lady Raiders are a team with grit and determination.

The No. 7 Baylor Lady Bears (14-2) lost 66-55 to No. 1 Connecticut (18-0) on Monday at the Ferrell Center. The loss ended a 69-game home winning streak that stretched back to March 7, 2010. The Bears’ only two losses this season have come at the hands of top five teams.

It was a thriller in Dallas at the AT&T Stadium despite the No. 9 Baylor Lady Bears falling to No. 5 Kentucky Wildcats 133-130 after four overtimes on Friday. This game proved that despite the loss of four starters from last year, Baylor is not going anywhere.

“I can tell you I learned a lot about my basketball team tonight,” Baylor head coach Kim Mulkey said. “If that’s the fifth ranked team in the country, we’re alright because we can score with them, but we have to get better defensively.“

The No. 9 Lady Bears will face their toughest challenge of the season, as they are underdogs for the first time against No. 5 Kentucky at 6:30 p.m. today at AT&T Stadium. This is a test for the Lady Bears, but the team is embracing the challenge.

“We’ve been preparing for them,” senior guard Odyssey Sims said. “We’re just going to keep playing like we have been and we’ll be ready.”

It’s a new look for the No. 9 Baylor Lady Bears, without a 6-foot-8-inch center barricading the paint. One thing remains consistent for the Bears and that is heavy guard play. It’s not a surprise that head coach Kim Mulkey stresses exceptional guard play because she played the position in college.

At Louisiana Tech, Mulkey led her team to a 130-6 record, two national titles and four final four appearances. She averaged 6.38 assists to hold the second-most all-time assist record.

The No. 9 Baylor Lady Bears overcame a slow start to defeat the San Jose State Spartans 113-73 on Tuesday at the Ferrell Center. The win marked Baylor’s 64th straight home victory to extend the nation’s longest home winning streak. Baylor has started the season 7-0 for the ninth time in school history, with six of those seasons coming under Baylor head coach Kim Mulkey. Despite the win, Mulkey still wasn’t impressed with the defense.

After a slow start, the No. 9 Baylor Lady Bears defeated the San Jose State Spartans 113-73 on Tuesday at the Ferrell Center.

Senior guard Odyssey Sims became the all-time assist leader with 505 career assists with 13 for the night. The All-American point guard also added 29 points. Sims had a double-double before halftime for the first time in her career. Freshman forward Nina Davis added 15 points while freshman post Khadijiah Cave contributed with 10 points. Senior guard Makenzie Robertson also gave the Lady Bears much needed production with 13 points.

No. 9 Baylor women’s basketball will put its undefeated streak on the line with a game against the San Jose State Spartans at 7 p.m. today at the Ferrell Center.

The Lady Bears are defeating opponents by an average of 45.5 points per game using a small lineup featuring freshman forward Nina Davis, senior guard Makenzie Robertson, senior guard Odyssey Sims, sophomore guard Niya Johnson and junior post Sune Agbuke.

The No. 9 Baylor Lady Bears extended their home winning streak to 63 games with a 92-62 win over UTSA Saturday to go 3-0 in the Athletes in Action Classic.

“Three wins in three days and a lot of playing time for players,” Baylor head coach Kim Mulkey said. “Obviously, I won’t be able to play that many players as the competition gets tougher. We still haven’t adjusted well to the fouls; we gave up way too many fouls and gave them way too many free throws. We gave them too many points. Sixty-two points is not good.”

Baylor overcame an early first half scare to defeat Northwestern State 88-54 Friday in the Lady Bears second game of the Athletes in Action Classic at the Ferrell Center.

“At halftime, I talked to them about their defense and how we didn’t play very good defense,” Baylor head coach Kim Mulkey said. “It was obvious when they were shooting a higher percentage than us from the field and we were missing too many free throws and we weren’t getting post touches.”

The No. 9 Baylor Lady Bears defended home court with a decisive 99-31 victory over Savannah State Thursday in the first game of the Athletes in Action Classic.

Senior guard Odyssey Sims led the team in scoring with 22 points. Sims and the other guards opened up the floor allowing Baylor’s post players to have strong outings. Sophomore post Kristina Higgins scored 14 points while adding 11 rebounds for her first career double-double. Junior post Sune Agbuke added 10 points and 10 rebounds for her second career double-double.

The No. 9 Baylor Lady Bears will put their 60-game home winning streak on the line with a three-game home stand for the Athletes in Action Classic at the Ferrell Center.

The three-day tournament will pit the Lady Bears against Savannah State today, Northwestern State Friday and UTSA Saturday.

“You get a lot of basketball,” Baylor head coach Kim Mulkey said. “You get to continue to see a lot of combinations. We’ll attack a lot of different defenses. I’m sure we’ll see a lot of zone, and we need to do that. We need to attack zones. We need to do a better job with rebounding.”

Leadership has different forms. For senior guard Odyssey Sims, it’s all about action. Her ability to take over games and propel No. 9 Baylor Lady Bears to wins is unmatched.

Despite Sims being the only returning starter, Baylor hasn’t lost a step, winning by an average of margin of 47 points.

It was the Odyssey Sims show as the senior guard put on a dominating performance Monday, leading No. 9 Baylor to a 79-46 win at the Ferrell Center to move to 3-0 this season.

Sims finished the night with 33 points, three assists and two rebounds and outscored Rice at halftime 21-16. When head coach Kim Mulkey took Sims out, she only trailed the entire Rice team by one point. This is the fourth straight game Sims has scored more than 20 points dating back to last year’s Sweet 16 game.
