Sports news from The Baylor Lariat.

The Lady Bears showed why they sit at No. 1 in the country Sunday afternoon, overcoming a No. 5/6 Texas A&M squad 63-60 in front of a record Reed Arena crowd who could not have asked for much more from two of the country’s best teams.

Whether it be national No. 1 against No. 5/6, Big 12 No. 1 against Big 12 No. 2 or the conference’s two leading scorers pitted against each other in the paint, Baylor will face its biggest conference challenge of the season at Texas A&M at noon Sunday.

Baylor could not overcome a sloppy first half and dropped its Monday night matchup at Kansas State, 69-61. Junior Quincy Acy led the Bears with 14 points, and three others finished in double figures.

A frigid blast of winter weather chilled Central Texas, forcing the seventh-ranked Baylor men’s tennis team to move the match to Lion Tennis Center in Ennis last Thursday.

After a 76-37 win over Kansas in which “dominance” just rolled off the tongue, the No. 1 Lady Bears look to carry over pretty much everything when they return home to face Texas Tech at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Baylor women’s tennis will face Houston at 3:30 p.m. today in the Baylor Tennis Center.

The Baylor men and women’s tennis teams started off the spring season with strong showings in each of their respective tournaments. The men placed the tandem of sophomore Roberto Maytin and senior John Peers in the finals of the main draw at the Sherwood Collegiate Cup on Monday in Thousand Oaks, Calif. For the women, junior Diana Nakic reached the title match Sunday at National Collegiate Tennis Classic in La Quinta, Calif.

“It gives us a winner and a loser in each contest. It gives us magnificent athletes that we marvel over and wish to be like. It gives us championships, accolades and trophies. It gives us loud, obnoxious body-painted fans at games. A sport gives us all these basic things, but in reality gives us so much more.”
