The Baylor baseball team starts its first Big 12 Conference home stand this weekend when it hosts the Kansas State Wildcats for a three-game series starting on Thursday night. The series against the Wildcats will be the first three home games in an 11-game home stand for the Bears.

“We’ve been trying to piece each game together, trying to string together a couple of wins,” junior right-handed pitcher Dillon Newman said. “Maybe this home series will allow us to do that.”

It was a slam session as senior center Brittney Griner recorded three dunks Tuesday night. President George W. Bush couldn’t help but smile as No. 1 Baylor defeated No. 8 Florida State 85-47 at the Ferrell Center.

Baylor baseball split a road series with No. 20 Oklahoma State over the weekend. The Bears fell in game one on Friday 5-0 and then won in extra innings 5-3 on Saturday. Game three was scheduled for Sunday but was cancelled due to inclement weather. The Bears are 11-13 overall and 1-1 in the Big 12 Conference.

Despite a strong first half of the game defensively, the No. 15 Baylor Lady Bears (26-7, 0-2 Big 12) fell to No. 9 Texas (29-4, 2-0) 5-1 Sunday in Austin, marking the second time this season that Baylor has lost back-to-back games.

The 29th-ranked Baylor men’s tennis team beat the Wichita State Shockers 6-1 Friday. The win brings the Bears to 12-4 this season.

“I thought some guys played well,” head coach Matt Knoll said. “We had some good spots. Doubles was certainly great. I think after the first sets and halfway through the second, I thought it was a really good day. We kind of lost our momentum and focus down the stretch and didn’t finish as well as we would’ve liked, but a lot of guys got some wins and I thought it was a positive day.”

The Baylor Bears defeated the Arizona State Sun Devils on Friday night at the Ferrell Center 89-86 to advance to the third round of the NIT. Senior point guard Pierre Jackson put on a show for the home fans by scoring 26 points and racking up a career-high 16 assists in the victory.

The Baylor baseball team opens up Big 12 Conference play on the road in a three-game weekend series against the No. 20 Oklahoma State Cowboys. The Bears will take on the Cowboys on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium in Stillwater.

The track and field team is hosting its first home meet of the season in the Baylor Quad Invitational today, an all-day outdoor event at the Hart-Patterson Track & Field Complex.

The invitational meet will start at 11 a.m. with running events commencing at 1:30 p.m. The meet concludes at 5:20 this evening with the 4×400-meter relays.

The No. 15 Baylor Lady Bear softball team will begin conference play against No. 9 Texas at 2 p.m. Saturday at Getterman Stadium. Baylor finished its non-conference play with a 26-5 record.

After defeating Long Beach State 112-66 Wednesday in the first round of the NIT, the No. 2 seed Baylor will host the No. 3 seed Arizona State Sun Devils at 7 p.m. tonight at the Ferrell Center.

The path for a consecutive National Title begins at 6:30 p.m. Sunday as the No. 1 Baylor Lady Bears play No. 16 Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers in the Ferrell Center in the first game of the NCAA Tournament.

The Baylor Bears defeated the Long Beach State 49ers 112-66 Wednesday at the Ferrell Center and advanced to the second round of the NIT.

“I thought it was a great way to start a tournament,” head coach Scott Drew said. “Obviously we did a lot of things well, starting with 31 assists and only 14 turnovers, shooting 63 percent and holding them to 33 percent. I thought we played like a weight was off of our shoulders and we really made a lot of extra passes and played well. In the last two games at home, I think we’ve really played well at home.”

The 15th-ranked Baylor softball team won a road game against the UT Arlington Mavericks 5-2 Wednesday at Allan Saxe Field. The win brings the Bears to 26-5 overall. The Mavericks fall to 15-12 on the season.

The 29th-ranked Baylor men’s tennis team will take on the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns at 3 p.m. today at the Hurd Tennis Center.

The Bears (10-4) have lost three straight matches, which have been against top-5 teams.

The Baylor men’s golf team will head to Goodyear, Ariz., for the Desert Shootout for the first time in program history. The tournament will be played today through Saturday at the Palm Valley Golf Course and will also be the Bears’ first out-of-state tournament of the spring.

The Baylor men’s baseball team had been on a slide, losing six out of its last eight games, but senior outfielder Nathan Orf and junior right-handed-pitcher Josh Michalec led the Bears to a 4-1 victory over the Sam Houston State Bearkats to get the Bears their first road victory of the season.

Junior guard Brady Heslip put on a shooting clinic and buried six first-half 3-pointers to propel Baylor to a commanding 59-34 half-time lead over the Long Beach State 49ers.

Beginning this fall, Baylor’s future quarterbacks will receive financial assistance thanks to an endowed scholarship in honor of Baylor alumnus and Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III.

The Baylor Bears move to 9-12 on the year after losing to the Sam Houston State Bearkats on Tuesday night, 4-2. Despite a five-inning shutout pitching performance from senior lefty Crayton Bare, the Bears narrowly fell to the Bearkats.

The No. 15 Lady Bear Softball team will play its last nonconference game of the season against the UT Arlington Mavericks at 5 p.m. today at Getterman Stadium. Baylor leads the series against the Mavericks 51-26-1 with the Lady Bears winning the most recent match up 3-0 on Feb. 22, in San Marcos.

Frustrated Southeastern Conference coaches say their league is treated more like a mid-major rather than a BCS conference.

The coaches said Monday the perception all year has been that the SEC was having a down year. The NCAA tournament selection committee apparently felt it was more than perception.

The 2012-13 season for the Baylor men’s basketball team was a rather rocky one. Baylor was able to win some highly impressive games this season but its inconsistency led it to lose some easier games on the schedule.

The Bears handed Kentucky its first home loss in 55 games, which was John Calipari’s first home loss as head coach of the Wildcats.

The Baylor Bears started the season ranked No. 19 in the preseason AP Top 25 poll.

The Bears went into the Big 12 Tournament as the No. 6 seed setting up a rematch with Oklahoma State. The Bears lost a heartbreaker to the Cowboys 74-72 in Kansas City at the Sprint Center. The Bears were down 42-24 at half and battled back in the second half to give Oklahoma State a run for their money. Senior point guard Pierre Jackson had a chance to win the game with a three at the buzzer but the shot deflected off the rim.

With March Madness upon us and spring break over, it is the time of year where everyone gets serious. Students make that final push academically for the perfect GPA before the semester ends, and basketball teams compete for the opportunity to play for a National Championship. This competition is reality for the No. 1 Lady Bears as they try to meet high expectations and advance to the Final Four round in New Orleans for a chance to win consecutive national titles.
