It’s a new year and a new team for the Baylor Lady Bears after losing six seniors – center Brittney Griner, guard Kimetria Hayden, guard Jordan Madden, forward Brooklyn Pope, forward Destiny Williams and student assistant Shanay Washington.

With the Griner era over, it’s up to the new seniors to lead the talented underclassmen to their potential. It will be a big task for the post players, but after practicing against Griner, they are up to the challenge.

With talks of rebuilding surrounding No. 10 Baylor, the Lady Bears played with something prove en route to a 110-55 win over the Grambling State Lady Tigers on Saturday at the Ferrell Center. Baylor’s 55-point victory was the largest margin of victory in a season opener under head coach Kim Mulkey.

The Lady Bears balanced offense had plenty of scorers, but it was senior guard Odyssey Sims who stole the show with her 28-point, four-assist, four-rebound and five-steal performance. Four other Lady Bears scored in double digits with three of the four players coming off the bench, some of which can be attributed to Sims helping draw defenders.

Coming into this year, hopes were high for the Bears after last year’s success, but those dreams came crashing down on Monday when the Bears found out their season ended after not being selected to the NCAA Tournament as a bubble team.

After starting the season ranked No. 10, Baylor began to climb steadily only to go into a free-fall during a six game winless streak. After a three game winning streak, Baylor’s last hope was to win the Big 12 Tournament, but No. 1 seed West Virginia shattered any hope Baylor had with a 1-0 win Friday night at Swope Soccer Village in Kansas City, Mo., in the Big 12 Championship Semifinals.

Baylor basketball opened its season last Friday night in the 2013 Bucks and Boots Showcase at the American Airlines Center in Dallas. The Bears played a 2013 NCAA Tournament team in the Colorado Buffaloes for a rematch of an early-season matchup last season.

Baylor led from start to finish in a 72-60 win over Colorado.

No. 5 Baylor (8-0) didn’t quite meet the all-time attendance record against No. 10 Oklahoma (7-2), but that was OK. The Bears still played in front of the most raucous crowd in the history of Floyd Casey Stadium on Thursday. In front of 50,337 screaming, blacked- out fans watching the biggest football game in Baylor history, the Bears made a statement with a 41-12 win over the Sooners.

“We showed tonight we can compete with any team in this conference and in the nation,” senior defensive end Chris McAllister said to a crowd of dozens of reporters after the 41-12 thrashing of Oklahoma.

After the unveilings of its three 2012-2013 banners, No. 10 Baylor Lady Bears kicked off its regular season with a 110-55 win over the Grambling State Lady Tigers Saturday at the Ferrell Center.

Baylor volleyball dropped their third straight conference match on Saturday night in a five-set match against in-state rival Texas Christian. With the win, TCU swept the season series against Baylor. Baylor lost 25-21, 21-25, 18-25, 29-27, 15-5. With the loss, the Bears dropped to 11-16 on the season and 3-8 in Big 12 play.

Baylor played Colorado last season in the Charleston Classic non-conference tournament on Nov. 16, 2012. The Bears would lose that game after Colorado shot 44.6 percent from the field and 40 percent from the free throw line. The Bears shot under 40 percent from the field in that game and under 20 percent from the three-point line.

No. 5 seed Baylor played hard against No. 1 seed West Virginia, but it wasn’t enough as the Bears fell 1-0 to the Mountaineers on Friday at Swope Soccer Village in Kansas City in the Big 12 Championship semifinals.

No. 6 Baylor came into its matchup against No. 10 Oklahoma with the top rated offense in the FBS, and one of the best in college football history. The game was meant to be a test of Baylor’s legitimacy on offense and whether it would hold up against elite competition.

After seven games without a true test on the gridiron, the Baylor Bears were supposed to be challenged by the No. 10 Oklahoma Sooners, the first ranked opponent for Baylor this season. The No. 6 Bears answered the call and more by thumping Oklahoma 41-12 in front of 50,537 fans decked out in black at Floyd Casey Stadium on Thursday night.

“[The blackout crowd] was something I hadn’t seen before,” Baylor head coach Art Briles said. “It was very emotional and very humbling at the same time. When you’ve got support, you can get things going a little bit. It certainly made a difference in the football game.”

The only thing standing in the way of a Big 12 Conference Final appearance is a game against regular season champions No. 1 seed West Virginia in the semi-finals of the Big 12 Tournament. The game will take place at 5:30 p.m. today at Swope Soccer Village in Kansas City.

No. 5 seed Baylor is riding a three-game winning streak and hopes to carry this momentum to take down the Big 12 powerhouse, but defeating West Virginia is no small feat.

TCU (3-6, 1-5) at Iowa State (1-7, 0-5)

Texas Christian has struggled mightily after coming into the season ranked in the top 20. The Horned Frogs are on a three-game losing streak, and have lost four of their last five and six of their last eight. TCU is coming off a tough overtime loss against West Virginia in Fort Worth, where their offense managed only 60 yards of rushing. Senior quarterback Casey Pachall has entered back into the offense, but the Horned Frogs still have one of the worst offenses in football. The defense has been solid, but a defense can only do so much when an offense averages only 23.4 points per game.

If there is a word that has been thrown around with Baylor football, it’s history. The Bears are ranked top five in the Associated Press poll for the second time in history and the first time since 1953. The Bears are ranked No. 6 in the BCS standings, the highest the program has been in the 16-year history of the BCS. Baylor is the highest ranked team in the Big 12. The Bears are 4-0 in conference play for the first time in Big 12 history.

With the wind of that success behind its back, Baylor (7-0, 4-0) looks forward to challenging traditional Big 12 power No. 10 Oklahoma (7-1, 3-1) today at Floyd Casey Stadium.

The No. 10 Baylor Lady Bears defeated the Oklahoma City Stars 91-49 Tuesday at the Ferrell Center.

Senior guard Odyssey Sims led the team 23 points, four rebounds and four assists with freshman post Khadijiah Cave adding 11 points and 11 rebounds for her first career double-double.

Baylor is one of only three universities in the country to be ranked in the top 25 in football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball.

Baylor has two football players in the top 10 on ESPN’s Heisman Watch. The Bears also have a perfect 7-0 record and are No. 6 in the BCS standings.

Women’s basketball is ranked first in the Big 12 and No. 10 in the nation in preseason polls.

On Nov. 19, 2011, Baylor University changed forever. The Baylor Bears football team were ranked No. 22 in the country by the BCS after making only its third appearance in the Associated Press poll in the past 16 seasons.

Baylor faced an all-too-familiar foe in Big 12 powerhouse Oklahoma. The No. 5 Sooners came to Waco undefeated all-time against the lowly Baylor Bears. With a plethora of upsets throughout the day, Oklahoma looked to push itself back into the national title picture with a convincing win against a ranked opponent.

The timing couldn’t have been more perfect for the Baylor Bears to win their second consecutive Big 12 game, defeating TCU 1-0 on Friday to close out the regular season.

“We’re a good team,” Baylor co-head coach Marci Jobson said. “We’ve always been a good team. We’ve suffered some losses and can play with anybody.

Coming off of a 3-0 sweep at Kansas, Baylor needed to show something to salvage this season at home against Iowa State. Unfortunately, the Bears were unable to find the winning formula as Iowa State (14-6, 8-2) overpowered Baylor (11-15, 3-7) in straight sets: 25-16, 25-16, 25-16.

Baylor soccer closed out the regular season with a 1-0 win against TCU on Friday for the Bears second consecutive win in Big 12 play for the first time this season.

The Baylor defense kept the TCU’s offense in check, and sophomore forward Bri Campos scored on a free kick from 26 yards out to give Baylor the lead. Baylor was aggressive the whole night, outshooting TCU 16-8 with an advantage of 8-0 in shots on goal.

Baylor’s cross country will host the Big 12 cross country championship on Saturday. The meet will take place at the Cottonwood Creek Golf Course in Waco. Men and women’s cross country teams will compete in the race. In their last meet of the regular season, women’s cross country placed 31st as a team while the men came in 49th. Junior Rachel Johnson and senior Brad Miles led their teams, placing 59 and 198 respectively.

Kansas (2-5, 0-4) at Texas (5-2, 4-0)

Kansas comes into this game fresh off a crushing loss to the Baylor Bears last Saturday. The Bears destroyed Kansas in every aspect of the game, winning 59-14 in Lawrence, Kan. The Jayhawks rank 101 in total defense with 450.7 yards of total offense allowed. Kansas is also 99 in rushing defense, allowing 203 yards rushing per game. The offense has been even worse. There is a big question mark at the quarterback position, as Jake Heaps has compiled less than 1,000 total yards through seven games. Kansas ranks 117 in the country with 290.6 yards of total offense per game. The Jayhawks are also 116 with only 17.7 points per game.

Fresh off a championship run in the National Invitational Tournament last season, Baylor men’s basketball looks to return to the NCAA Tournament for the third time in five years under head basketball coach Scott Drew. Baylor comes into this season ranked No. 25 in the Associated Press poll, the seventh year in a row that Baylor has been ranked. 

Baylor will finish out its regular season against TCU at 7 p.m. today at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium in Fort Worth. After breaking its six-game winless streak, Baylor hopes to carry that momentum to snatch another win.

With an 8-0-0 record against TCU all-time, the Bears have never lost to TCU, but the Horned Frogs are ready to improve their seeding for the upcoming Big 12 Tournament, as they stand in a three-way tie for fifth place along with Baylor and Iowa State.

Baylor’s defense fueled its offense as the Baylor Lady Bears cruised to a 111-52 win in an exhibition game over Palm Beach Atlantic on Wednesday. Senior point guard Odyssey Sims led the team with 21 points, eight rebounds, six assists and five steals.

Without Brittney Griner and last year’s seniors in the lineup, this was a different Baylor team, but it showed its fight as all 11 players scored in the game.

In its first matchup, Kansas dominated Baylor in virtually all aspects of the game en route to a 3-1 victory. In their second matchup on Wednesday night, Kansas was even stronger.

The Jayhawks won in straight sets: 25-14, 25-13, 25-15.

With the loss, Baylor falls to 11-14 on the season, including 3-6 in the Big 12.

There hasn’t been a party like this in New England for nearly a century.
