The south end of 10th Street flooded with people celebrating the national championship win Monday night as the Waco police department and the fire department supervised the masses from afar.
The Bears are the last team dancing this year, taking down the formerly undefeated Bulldogs in the national championship game.
“That’s the best team that I’ve seen in the seven years I’ve been at Houston,” opposing head coach Kelvin Sampson said. “They’re really, really good.”
The Bears are looking for their first national title, facing off against Houston in the first semifinal in 71 years.
Baylor will take the court again on Saturday against old conference foe No. 2-seed Houston.
The Bears will be back to face No. 3-seed Arkansas on Monday, with a chance to make their first Final Four since 1950.
Baylor returns to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2017, facing fifth-seeded Villanova Saturday in search for a ticket to the Elite Eight.
The Bears will take on the winner of the matchup between No. 5 Villanova and No. 13 North Texas next weekend.
The Bears will be back on Sunday to face off against the winner of North Carolina and Wisconsin. The location, time and broadcast location have yet to be determined.
Fuentes has been to every men’s basketball home game since 1999 and often makes trips to away games as well. He can usually be spotted behind the opposing team’s bench wearing a Baylor jersey with a hat and shooting sleeve, yelling his unique form of trash talk that’s hard to dispute.
“We’re going to win the national championship,” Vital said. “I’m not saying we might. We’re going to win a national championship.”
On Baylor’s bench, one can find three-point sharpshooters, high-flying dunkers and tenacious defenders.
A Seeding 18 Years in the Making
Some of the seeding choices were odd, but that’s to be expected when you haven’t selected a bracket in two years. Regardless of where they are seeded, it’s sure each team is just happy to see March Madness back.
Nearly two years since the last tournament selection was announced, Baylor was given the No. 1 seed in the South region, second overall in the tournament behind only undefeated Gonzaga and above Illinois and Michigan.
