Baylor football officially begins this week as the Bears take on TCU this Friday at Floyd Casey Stadium! The game starts at 7 p.m. Bears are encouraged to wear the green and gold in support of BU football.

The Traditions Rally, an annual event that celebrates the beginning of the Baylor football season on Sept. 01, 2011 from 6:30 p.m. – 10 p.m. Sponsored by Baylor Athletics, Student Activities, the Baylor Activities Council, and Greek Life, the Traditions Rally takes place in the SUB Bowl and Fountain Mall. Free food, live music, and a chance to meet Baylor’s coaches and players make this an event not to miss.

The weekend of the Sept. 23 and 24 will offer students a chance to invite parents to campus in order to experience Baylor life. Sign up parents for a weekend pass and offer your family a chance to see their favorite bear.

Students looking to see everything Late Night has to offer will have to explore multiple locations this year. Instead of concentrating the entire night at the Student Life Center as in past years, Baylor will use four locations for Friday night’s festivities.

Fort Faculty, the Bill Daniel Student Center, Fountain Mall, Baylor Sciences Building, Moody Memorial Library, and several other campus locations are under construction to increase green space, update furniture and finishes, and make space for expanded and new dining options.

Jay Goble has been named Baylor’s women’s golf head coach. Goble has spent the past three seasons as assistant coach at Florida. In each season there, the Gators reached postseason play and advanced further than the previous season. Goble will officially join Baylor athletics staff on July 1.

Baylor, along with two other schools, united the movement to rename the sport formerly known as competitive cheer. Acrobatics and tumbling is currently supported by six inaugural members in its bid for recognition by the NCAA as an emerging sport.

With the No. 5 overall seed, Baylor was one of 16 schools selected to host the first and second rounds. The Lady Bears will welcome the UT Arlington Mavericks on May 14. The winner will advance to face the winner of the Oklahoma-Cal Poly matchup.

Though her team was not offered an at-large bid to the NCAA West Regional May 5-7, junior Chelsey Cothran became one of six individual golfers offered an at-large bid to travel to Auburn, Wash. Cothran is the first Baylor golfer in program history to receive the individual bid.

No. 7 Women’s Tennis chases its sixth consecutive Big 12 Tournament crown this weekend after capturing its seventh consecutive conference regular season title. They carry a 12-game win streak into the tourney that they have won as the No. 1 seed each of the last five years.

No. 7 men’s Tennis starts competition in the Big 12 Tournament today after receiving a bye in the first round yesterday. The Bears claimed their ninth regular season Big 12 Title in ten years a week ago when they downed No. 6 Texas A&M at the Baylor Tennis Center.

Wichita Falls senior Colton Canava will present a solo art exhibition of his mixed media paintings from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Harrington House.

Applications for the A.A. & Marjorie Hyden Scholarship, a scholarship for junior and senior student leaders, are due Friday. Eight $500 scholarships will be awarded for next fall. Beta Beta Beta will host a native Texas plant sale from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Baylor Sciences Building Patio Area to raise money for student scholarships. The sale includes perennials, shrubs, grasses and ornamental trees. Only cash or checks will be accepted. Prices range from $1.99 to $24.99.

Baylor women’s golf coach Sylvia Ferdon announced Tuesday she will retire after 17 years as the Lady Bears’ head coach. Her Baylor coaching highlights include 10 NCAA Regional appearances and three third-place finishes at the Big 12 tournament.

Visit the new School of Social Work downtown at 811 Washington Avenue to view alumnus Mark Menjivar’s photography exhibit “You Are What You Eat.” The images will be on display until April 29.
