Baylor equestrian fell to the No. 3 Texas A&M Aggies on the road Saturday afternoon. In a blowout match, the Aggies dominated in every event, winning 14-4 against the Bears.
Baylor equestrian started out off slow and never managed to catch up. First, the team lost 3-1 in fences and 4-0 in horsemanship. Junior hunt seat Shannon Hogue earned the only point for Baylor in fences, riding 83-73 against her opponent. Senior hunt seat Abby Jorgensen held off her opponent by tying in her event, 77-77. Horsemanship did not go much better, with junior western Kaylee Mellott only tying her opponent, and leading the Bears into the break down 7-1.
Reining and equitation in the flat did not go much better, but senior hunt seat Rachel Van Allen brought home a point for Baylor, being the only Baylor rider in the event to win. In Reining, freshman western Carly Salter and senior western Charlotte Green won Baylor’s final two points, rounding out their four point-total in the meet.
Although it was a disappointing day overall for the Bears, they managed to make 12 of the rides a close call, and kept the Aggies on their toes. The last time the Bears faced the Aggies in 2016, they lost 10-8. This meet was perhaps a harder loss, as it snapped Baylor’s three-meet winning streak and gave the Bears their first loss of the spring season.
With a loss and three wins under their belt, Baylor’s team is flying to Delaware March 2-3, in hopes of taking down South Carolina and Delaware State University in DSU’s tournament. Catch recaps of the meets on the Baylor Equestrian Team’s official page, or on the Lariat’s website.
