Swing Dance Society hosts murder mystery dance

The Baylor Swing Dance Society will host its first Clue-themed mystery dance at 7 p.m. Friday in the Beckam and White room of the Bill Daniel Student Center. Admission is free for members and $5 for non-members, and the dance will start with a beginner lesson.

“It’s a great way to try out swing dancing. If anyone has thought about it before, this is a fun way for people to see what swing dancing is like and make some new friends,” said Plano junior Meagan Smith, the Baylor Swing Dance Society vice president.

The society’s secretary, Schertz junior Megan Van Horn, said it will be like a live action version of the board game Clue, with the addition of swing dancing and swing music.

Van Horn said the officers will be dressed as characters from the game, and attendees will be given an envelope with a single clue when they enter the dance. To receive more clues, they must dance and interact with other people.

Prizes will be given to the best sleuth and the best Clue-themed outfit.

The best sleuth will be the person who solves the mystery. If more than one person solves it, they will be placed in a random drawing for the grand prize of a Common Grounds gift card.

There will be a fashion show for attendees, as well, with the winner receiving a free T-shirt from the society.

“I’m really excited for it,” Smith said. “I think it’s coming together probably even better than we thought it would. I think we’ve planned it very tightly.”

Van Horn said the society came up with the idea for the dance in April, and Smith said it will be even more fun if more people attend.

“We’re basically a big group of really good friends,” Van Horn said. “So it’s always great to hang out and be goofballs.”

They dance as a group from 8 to 10 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday on Burleson Quadrangle. However, Van Horn said with the weather changing, they also meet in different indoor locations. For questions about location or to be added to their email list, interested students can contact baylorswing@gmail.com.

Smith said she is hoping to see some non-members at their mystery dance on Friday.

“Anyone can come to our dances, whether they’ve done swing dance before or not,” Smith said. “We want to make it so anyone can feel comfortable.”

Smith said all of their dances involve social dances, but that they also try to involve some fun dance games. She is a junior and has been a member of the society since her freshman year.

“I really fell in love with it, and they can’t get rid of me now,” Smith said.

She said she thinks Friday’s dance is going to be a particularly good one.

“I am very excited for it,” Van Horn said. “I’ve been working on it for a very long time, and I just think it’s a fun event to get people involved in the group.”
