Long before senior safety Tyler Turner wore the Baylor uniform, he was already working toward a future in something bigger than himself.
From the Brennan Junior Bears to the Baylor Bears, he has had his eyes set on the field and a chance to shine in the bold lights of any stadium he sets foot in.
Turner’s story didn’t begin in Waco. It began 175 miles south of I-35 in San Antonio, where he grew up and quickly made a name for himself.
His flourishing talent at a young age quickly gained attention and open a door to a path that can only be driven by passion and talent. As an eighth grader at Luna Middle School, Turner was put to the test as Brennan High School head coach Stephen Basore watched him play.
“He stood out as an eighth grader coming to Brennan because he was so successful there,” Basore said. “Every now and then, you get a middle school kid that is pretty dominant, and usually if they are dominant in middle school that’s a sign that they can join a team early or have a big high school impact.”
He made a surprise impact as one of the first freshmen to be playing for Basore’s varsity team.
“I was super glad I got to do that,” Turner said. “It kickstarted my development as a player, just getting to play with older talent as a younger guy.”
Turner became one of Brennan’s most successful players. He broke out in his junior years with 86 tackles and three interceptions. He followed that with a defensive MVP season as a senior.
He was rated a four-star prospect and was ranked the No. 4 safety in Texas. Like he did in middle school, Turner attracted the eyes of many coaches with his unwavering talent.
Turner landed offers from notable schools like Arkansas, Auburn, Texas A&M and Ole Miss. He committed to Baylor in his senior year of high school, but took a surprising turn when he flipped his commitment from Baylor to Oregon.
“I personally didn’t think I was that good, and then I started getting those offers,” Turner said. “It was definitely super special, and I was very grateful to have that opportunity.”
He played 17 games with seven tackles across two seasons with the Ducks before entering the transfer portal in 2024 and committing to Baylor once again.
Turner adjusted to playing for the Bears. He tallied 32 tackles across 12 games in 2025 and remained in the safety rotation throughout the season. He stepped up this season with senior safety Jacob Redding missing the year with a torn ACL. Turner has recorded 11 tackles as well as a forced fumble and a pass breakup.
Turner’s attitude and discipline have proven to be a cornerstone throughout his journey. Those attributes were built because of his family and upbringing.
“Not everybody can walk the walk, but Tyler can walk the walk and talk the talk,” Basore said. “His mom did a great job raising him, and he checks all the boxes to be as successful as he is now, and it’s just great to see him still playing and having fun.”
His journey to Baylor was not defined by one moment or a simple achievement but by his own determination that began as a middle schooler.
