Career Center to courtside: Baylor alum gives advice on post-grad plans

During his time at Baylor, Arish Bheraiya was an assistant for the Baylor football team and helped players that were injured. He didn’t have everything figured out for after graduation, but he did know that he wanted to work in sports medicine.

Bheraiya now works for Oklahoma City Thunder as an account manager on the courts and said the Career Center played a role in helping him refine his vision for the future.

“The Career Center was there for me,” Bheraiya said. “After I graduated with my Bachelor’s of Science, I knew that I wanted to continue studying and get my masters, but I also wanted to start getting some work experience in the field I wanted to go into. [The Career Center] helped me polish my resume, and after applying, I got a job helping the Baylor football team.”

Bheraiya said working for the football team is how he got his foot into the door in the sports world, but it also taught him a lot of skills that he still uses to this day.

“Being front and center on the field is something I knew I wanted to do for the rest of my life,” he said. “It felt rewarding to help those players with anything they needed, knowing how much work they put in on and off the field.”

Although Bheraiya was still studying, having this job on the side gave him a hands-on experience which ultimately helped him get other jobs in his future and made him realize what he enjoyed doing.

“The job I have now with Oklahoma City Thunder is unfathomable because without my assistant job at Baylor University I wouldn’t have grown to get this opportunity as a manager,” Bheraiya said.

Baylor also has Handshake, an app where students can list their skills, education and job preferences. It matches them with the best opportunities based on their background. This is especially useful for health students, as it helps them refine their resumes for medical school applications or other specialized fields.

It’s a practical way to make sure their experience shines when it matters most, according to Jonathan Echols, Career Center communications and media manager.

“Handshake is specifically made for college students,” Echols said. “It helps Baylor students get jobs because the jobs posted are geared towards college students and are entry level.”

Handshake filters jobs according to what you’re looking for. This makes it easier on students when they apply because the jobs they would want to apply for are already lined up.

The app also helps students find internships, and companies often post on Baylor’s Handshake app to directly appeal to students, Echols said.

The Career Center at Baylor serves as a resource for students looking to land a job in a field they enjoy, but it’s up to students to take initiative. They offer resume and cover letter reviews, giving students valuable feedback to help them stand out. Whether you’re headed into the workforce or looking at graduate schools, the Career Center is there to guide you.
