Fort Hood said a shooting, which resulted in at least one death, occurred on the Army base today.

The number of injured victims is not yet known, although the most recent estimates were at 14. The Army base confirmed emergency crews were on the scene and further details were not known.

The base is still on lockdown and injured people were being treated at Fort Hood’s Carl R. Darnall Medical Center, as well as at other local hospitals, according to the U.S. Army’s official Twitter.

An anonymous senior U.S. defense official said the suspected shooter is believed to be dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The official wished to remain anonymous because the investigation is ongoing and the individual was not authorized to release the information to the public.

The base’s Directorate of Emergency Services said its initial report of the shooter’s death was still unconfirmed.

Emergency crews were on the scene, according to a statement posted on the base’s website.

The most recent shooting to take place at Fort Hood occurred in 2009 when Maj. Nidal Hasan gunned down unarmed soldiers. The incident left 31 wounded and 13 dead, according to a Reuters article. Hasan, who was a U.S. Army psychiatrist, opened fire in a medical facility at the military base. He was sentenced to death in August 2009 for his crime, which he said was “retaliation for U.S. wars in the Muslim world,” according to the article. The 2009 shooting was the deadliest attack on a domestic military base in history.

Associated Press contributed to this article.
