Baylor students left behind the classroom and explored the European fashion circuit on a study abroad trip this June. Plaids, outrageous colors, unusual haircuts and ever-changing trends spattered the streets of Europe as students traveled through London, Edinburg and Paris, exploring the world of modern trends and the latest additions to couture design.
Despite tensions built in the East between Russia and Ukraine over the past few weeks, the Baylor study abroad program in Russia isn’t turning back.
While at Baylor, students may remain unaware of opportunities available outside the Baylor Bubble, the social and cultural boundaries around Baylor’s campus, like embarking on an academic journey in another culture or part of the world.
I have been to the Louvre and I have seen the Mona Lisa. I have taken my picture in front of Big Ben, and I have watched the time change on the world’s oldest astronomical clock. I have seen the world outside of Texas.
I came to Baylor this August as an exchange student from Japan. I have never been to America before, so I came here for the first time. I am having an amazing life now. All of my experiences here are fresh and wonderful for me, and I have never experienced like this life before. For example, there are delicious American foods, good weather every day, and a lot of kind people.
It wasn’t quite a Cinderella story. Sure, I was running around at midnight. It’s true, I’d just seen fireworks at a party. But instead of dropping a glass slipper, I’d left something a little more valuable behind.
The trip up to this point had been like a fairy tale. This past summer, I spent a month in Italy studying writing and photography through Baylor’s study abroad program. We’d been in Italy for a few weeks, had already seen Rome and were now starting classes in Florence.
The study abroad trip wasn’t going as she’d hoped.
Austin junior Rachel Clark watched as one American student after another left for the Cairo International Airport.
On June 1, a little more than a month before Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi was deposed, Clark arrived in Cairo to take two six-week classes, Egyptian Polictics and Government and Arab Society. Originally, she was supposed to stay for eight weeks. Because of the turmoil of Morsi being removed from office, Clark was forced to leave three weeks early.
For students wondering if the cost of studying abroad versus at Baylor’s Waco campus, it isn’t very different at all.
Though some students might imagine a semester living somewhere in Europe would be out of their price range, the truth is that if you can afford a semester at Baylor, chances are you can afford a semester abroad, according to Alamogordo, N.M., senior Allison Hainline.
“After 26 hours of travel, a canceled flight, one train, three planes, a taxi and pickup truck, I finally arrived back in Texas at 11:30 p.m. on Dec. 22. I felt almost as if I had been on a continual journey for four months, while I studied abroad.”
