Construction is well underway in South Russell Residence Hall as Baylor construction crews renovate living and public areas.

The changes being made to the building will ultimately result in both males and females residing in the hall starting fall of 2015. The hall will be open for female residence only in fall of 2014.

South Russell Residence Hall will officially close down for renovations this summer, but tuition for the 2013-2014 year will not increase due to the construction.

The Baylor Board of Regents authorized $12 million for the refurbishment process at its meeting on Friday. The residence hall will be closed next year and work is expected to be finished in 2014.

At last Thursday’s Student Senate meeting, the Senate voted to recommend renovating five university dorms – Collins, Penland, North Russell, South Russell and Martin. While the plans aren’t final, they will likely call for adding additional student lounge and study spaces, improving bathrooms, replacing floors and ceilings and improving the technological capacities of the residence halls. The plan would be implemented over the next 15 to 20 years.

While safety may be a concern for students on campus late at night, Campus Living & Learning provides a free shuttle service from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. for all on-campus residents. The shuttle is a golf cart driven by one of six safety and security education officers.
