Since September 2010, the President’s Scholarship Initiative has accumulated more than $100 million toward student scholarships, surpassing a goal set for the end of this year.

At Tuesday’s Dr Pepper Hour in the Bill Daniel Student Center, President Ken Starr announced that his goal of raising $100 million toward scholarships by December 31, 2013, had not only been met sooner than expected, but had been surpassed.

The $100 million President’s Scholarship Initiative, which President Ken Starr announced Sept. 15, 2010, is nearing the end of its three-year collection period. It is set to end May 2013.

The initiative focuses on making a Baylor education more affordable to more students. So far, $52.5 million of the target $100 million has been raised.

The President’s Scholarship Initiative has reached $43 million and is on track to reach its goal of $100 million by May 2013, Ali Abercrombie, assistant vice president and campaign director, said.

After a five-month legislative struggle in Austin in which the Baylor administration was an active lobbying force, steep budgetary cuts to the Tuition Equalization Grant program have hit Baylor graduate students and incoming freshmen the hardest.

The Baylor Board of Regents met last week and made several developments toward Baylor’s future. At Friday’s meeting, the board approved next year’s $428.6 million operating budget, agreed to establish the Robbins Institute for Health Policy and Leadership in the Hankamer School of Business and welcomed new members as others finished their terms.

A panel of campus leaders met with students to answer questions on topics ranging from Baylor’s stance on conceal and carry legislation to the university’s denial of a charter for the Sexual Identity Forum in a university town hall meeting Wednesday.

Funds for the President’s Scholarship Initiative recently surpassed the $20 million level. The initiative was publicly announced in September and is slated for completion in May 2013.

Baylor alumnus Dr. Jerry Haag has been named vice president for university development, ending a national search begun in the fall to fill the position. He will begin work at Baylor on April 18.

In keeping with its mission of providing a bridge between Baylor and the local community, the Baylor/Waco Foundation has begun fundraising for an endowed scholarship to be awarded to a McLennan County high school graduate beginning in the fall of 2012.
