It all started in the fall of 1987, when a young man from Charleston, South Carolina, moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to begin graduate school in sociology at LSU. What he didn’t expect was that battling the sweltering Louisiana’s heat would lead him to the love of his life.

Between a cancer diagnosis, infidelity and moving over 20 times, Chris and Julie Bennett said they have been through “hell and back” but still harbor the same love for each other they found freshman year of college.
“Ring by Spring.” While some might say it as a joke when referring to their significant other, it’s a reality for some Baylor students, giving the phrase at least a bit of merit. Some students couldn’t imagine the added pressure of marriage on top of their busy life as college students. However, brides-to-be alumna Stephy Mahoney and Virginia Beach, Va. senior Layne Martin have proven it’s doable.
On their first day of class freshman year, Wiff Rudd, professor of trumpet and brass area coordinator, and his now-wife, Jeanette Rudd, had their picture taken on a Baylor swing by The Baylor Lariat. The next day, a Lariat print edition hit the stands, and much to their surprise, the cover featured their photo. They said it was a definitive moment for them, and on Wednesday — almost five decades to the day the original was taken — they recreated that same photo.
