Oftentimes we’re haunted by our failures. The cycle begins with feeling inadequate, even when we’ve exhausted ourselves with a never-ending list of goals. Yet the true failure is not what we aren’t able to accomplish; it’s failing to notice or celebrate every win that comes our way.

Sometimes, the most powerful step forward is accepting that not everything will make sense. Life will be life, and not every situation needs an explanation — only a willingness to learn and grow from it.

Learn to love your scars, for your past self if no one else. I’ve had a prominent scar for most of my life. Learning to be proud of who I am and love the uniqueness it brings was a major part of becoming who I am today.

Real families have issues. They have tense meals and strained relationships. Being at school doesn’t fix those things; it just helps us forget about them. Regardless of the issues, our families are still our families. And what’s a better time to express our love for them than the holidays?

If you choose to surround yourself with peers who don’t acknowledge self-growth or well-being, you most likely never will either. However, if you decide today that your peers are flattening the tires of your energy bus, new revelations will naturally come your way. Remember that good leaders are often surrounded by great people.

There’s an old saw that gets repeated with some frequency around Baylor.

It goes, “There’s nothing to do that’s fun around Waco.”

Well, to some extent that’s true. Encouraging growth downtown has been the goal of various organizations in Waco for nearly 50 years.
