The Baylor Modern Languages and Cultures department will bring caroling groups from 11 different languages to unite Christmas on Fifth Street in global harmony as part of its Holiday Carols from Around the World tradition.

“All in all, we want students to have a platform where they can express themselves in the language they’re learning,” Dr. Hajime Kumahata, director of the iMLC and senior lecturer in Japanese, said. “Because a lot of times language study is within the classroom and you just answer — but we’re trying to give students a platform to have fun.”
Dr. Jamie Rankin, 2026 Cherry Award Finalist, gave a lecture about language transformation through research-based vocabulary acquisition today at 3 p.m., encouraging both language learners and language teachers to note the difficulty in adjusting to spoken word.

The Global LLC program was started in 2008 by Janet Norden, a lecturer in the Spanish department. Along with a group of students, she came up with an idea to expand global education and language-immersion skills.
Students who are a part of the program have a target language that they want to learn, and then they can choose to be placed in a full-immersion suite.
