The killing of El Mencho, a Mexican cartel leader, triggered a wave of retaliatory violence across multiple parts of Mexico, drawing attention and raising concerns among students who have ties to the region.

In a recent conference, Vice President of Student Life Dr. Sharra Hynes noted that Baylor not only welcomed one of its academically strongest freshmen classes, but also “the largest number of international students that we’ve ever had in an undergraduate class.”
The Center of Global Engagement is hosting an International Tailgate for the Saturday football game against Samford. International students will be able to experience an American football tradition by gathering together for food and games before the big game. More details and sign-ups for international student and scholar services’ events are sent out in the BU World Weekly newsletter each Monday.
“A lot of international students have been saying that they feel like they don’t have a community here,” Zhou said. “I don’t think international students feel like they were receiving the support, and they didn’t know that there was a Center of Global Engagement department on campus.”

Katie Klingstedt, coordinator of international programs, said the hope for the program is that international students get to see what it’s like to live in America outside of a college campus. They are matched with a domestic student, a faculty member or a local family to meet with once a month for a semester.
