Browsing: Baylor sustainability

The only thing better than finding crêpes, freshly squeezed juices and homemade beauty products in the same place is finding all of the above — and more — between classes at an on-campus farmers market.

The Baylor Sustainability Office will host the second annual on-campus farmers market from 1 to 5 p.m. Wednesday in Vera Martin Daniel Plaza, next to the Bill Daniel Student Center.

After being recognized by the Sierra Club for its green efforts, Baylor Sustainability seems to be on a roll and defying environmental obstacles of all kinds, but the biggest challenge may be yet to come — the re-education of the Baylor community on sustainable living.

This semester brings new approaches to facilitating practical methods of fulfilling the mission of the Department of Sustainability. Smith Getterman, assistant director of sustainability and special projects, said the department’s approach to sustainable practices will appeal to any lifestyle.

For the first time in Baylor’s history, university sustainability efforts have been recognized by the Sierra Club. Baylor was ranked 133 on the organization’s “Cool Schools 2013” list, which honored 162 four-year colleges and universities that offer exemplary environmental initiatives.

Schools featured on the list, which was released in August, were ranked based on the presence of campus sustainability resources.

Participating universities completed an extensive survey regarding student, staff and faculty access to green initiatives such as environmental organizations, campus-wide energy saving efforts and sustainability-oriented curriculums.

Green wasn’t just a color Thursday at Common Grounds.

Houston junior Eliza Coleman and Plano junior Ryan Schaap designed two “green” outfits for the Project Greenway fashion show at 7 p.m. Thursday. The pair won the competition and received a $500 prize.

Recycling is becoming cutting-edge.

Baylor has set a university-wide recycling record for the second year in a row.

In 2012, the university recycled 440.71 tons, breaking its previous record of 414.34 in 2011 by more than 25 tons. All of the university’s recycling is weighed by SunBright Disposal Services, which reports the weight of the recycling to the university.
