When Baylor Army ROTC Capt. Bernard Sheppard first arrived on campus nearly two years ago, one of the first cadets who personally introduced himself was Baylor senior Jackson Balsavias. In January 2013, Baylor’s reaction to active duty opportunities was not entirely positive, according to The Baylor Lariat. A female member of the ROTC said back then she did not want to obtain an active duty position, and was unsure if that was where she would be placed now. Responses have changed over the past 10 years — Baylor ROTC female cadets now view this opportunity as empowering.
After a day of training on a high ropes course just off campus Thursday, Baylor Army ROTC cadets will once again be out of their typical environment this weekend as they attend field training exercises at Fort Wolters in Mineral Wells.
They will work with cadets from Texas Christian University and the University of North Texas, practicing skills they will need to know as leaders in the military.
At a magnitude not reached in recent years, Baylor will honor those who have served in the military with a Veterans Day ceremony. From 5 to 6 p.m. Monday at the Bill Daniel Student Center Bowl, the Baylor and Waco community will come together to pay homage and learn about veterans’ service.
The ceremony, sponsored by Veterans of Baylor, Veteran Education & Transition Services (VETS), and Baylor Army & Air Force ROTC, is intended to explain what Veterans Day is, how it came to be and why it is important, said Seattle junior Bryan Solis, public affairs officer for Veterans of Baylor and Marine Corps veteran. The event is free and open to the public.
