General campus news of Baylor University for the Lariat

From eating cereal out of another person’s mouth to kissing your best friend to a plethora of dance routines, TikTok has created a unique realm for spreading thousands of unconventional trends.

Baylor administration is in the process of potentially forming a new LGBTQ student organization that follows the university’s policies and procedures. The group will be a place for people to have conversations about human sexuality.

A group of students took to Fountain Mall Friday to protest Baylor’s mask mandates and COVID-19 testing policies. The students said penalties for missing twice-weekly COVID-19 tests are harsh and discriminatory against unvaccinated students. They also said students should be free to choose if they want to wear a mask or get vaccinated.

At the “Gender, Race and Justice: The Future of American Policing” event on Thursday, a panel of experts spoke about various issues within the American policing system. Panelists also spoke about reforms to the system, including police departments taking better accountability, training police to de-escalate situations and promoting engagement between officers and the community.

“There is research that suggests increased levels of social media use can lead to self-absorption and an unhealthy attempt to uphold a perfect online image,” Dr. Christine Limbers said.

This month, Baylor’s Honors College, with the support of five collaborating universities, kicked off 100 Days of Dante — the world’s largest Dante reading group. The event was created in honor of famous Italian poet and moral philosopher Dante Alighieri, who is revered for his work, “La Commedia,” better known as “The Divine Comedy.”

Family Weekend returns in person with a few twists not seen before the pandemic. The weekend is guaranteed to be filled with Baylor traditions as families attend a home football game and the sold-out shows of After Dark.

While the bears may no longer go to games or drink Dr Pepper, alumni and current students alike hold a shared connection to Baylor’s live mascots. These days, Joy and Lady reside at the Bill and Eva Williams Bear Habitat.

Baylor Student Government hosted the Big XII Student Government Conference from Sept. 16 to Sept. 18, with representatives from the student governments of each of the Big XII schools traveling to Waco to collaborate and discuss ongoing campus procedures and problems.

“I haven’t been this excited about something in a long time,” Dr. Burt Burleson, university chaplain and dean of Spiritual Life and Missions, said.
