Robert Griffin III is preparing to face the New Orleans Saints in the Redskins’ season opener Sunday, but the key to upgrading his training efforts may be back at Baylor.
“He practices a lot and can’t have the whole defense out there every time,” said Dr. Michael Korpi, professor of film and digital media. “His dream was that he could go into the practice facilities, even without a receiver, and practice against a defense and be able to tell if the pass was completed or not.”
It’s not the end of the world.
At least that’s what one man thinks.
Dr. Michael Callaghan, assistant professor of anthropology at Southern Methodist University, will give the first in a series of lectures at 3 p.m. and again at 6 p.m. today at the Mayborn Museum.
Aransas Pass senior Brook Bonorden, an anthropology major, contributed to a historic find in Huqoq, Israel, this past July: the discovery of a mosaic that illustrates the biblical story of Samson. Bonorden was part of an excavation team headed by the University of North Carolina that included students and professors from other colleges across the nation.
Last year, Baylor’s RG3-led offense was historic. Points came in bunches at a rate of more than 45 per game. The defense, however, was a different story.
Baylor’s defense in 2011 gave up more than 37 points per game.

The Baylor football team made its statement with a 59-24 victory over the SMU Mustangs Sunday evening.
“We felt like we had to come out and see what we were,” Baylor head coach Art Briles said. “Just like everybody else, we weren’t sure. We felt like we knew what we had. We felt like we knew we had a determined, eager, anxious football team that wanted to prove themselves.”

The Baylor volleyball team swept Texas State 3-0 Tuesday night at the Ferrell Center.
Baylor started out the first set by quickly jumping out to an 8-4 advantage, forcing Texas State to call an early timeout.
Following the timeout, the Bobcats came out refocused and won the next two points, battling to even the set at 10 apiece.
Senior Alyssa Dibbern spiked the ball for a Baylor point.
After defeating Nebraska and McNeese State over the weekend, the Baylor soccer team moved to 5-1 on the season.
The women allowed just three shots in the two games and did not give up a goal.

Former Baylor student and Baylor football defensive end Tevin Elliott was indicted on three counts of sexual assault Monday by a McLennan County grand jury.
A Bill of Indictment was filed Monday stating that Elliott was indicted for two counts of sexual assault involving a single victim. Jason Darling, Elliott’s attorney, said Elliot was also indicted on a count of sexual assault involving a different victim in November 2009, but not arrested in connection with the incident. The indictment record relating to this incident is sealed to the public.
Anthony Johnson, a 43-year-old Waco resident, has been charged in connection with the death of Richard Watson. Watson, a 54-year-old Waco resident, was pronounced dead August 22 at Hillcrest Hospital. It was the third killing this year in Waco.
Louisiana officials said Wednesday they may have to intentionally breach a levee in a flooded area as Hurricane Isaac made a slow, drenching slog inland before weakening to a tropical storm and a dusk-to-dawn curfew was declared in New Orleans.
Last season was arguably the greatest football season Baylor has ever known.
As far as individual awards go, Robert Griffin III claimed the most prestigious award in all of college football, the Heisman Trophy.

Hurricane Isaac raked the Louisiana coast and headed for a shuttered New Orleans late Tuesday, with brutal timing that made up for much of what it lacked in punch.
Just hours shy of the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, Isaac’s approach left deserted streets from New Orleans’ famous French Quarter to Tampa 480 miles away, where Republican conventioneers pressed on with only a passing mention of the storm’s arrival.
Lorin Matthews, associate professor of physics, and her husband Christopher Matthews live in a home they completely renovated themselves. What’s more? It’s the Palladium. The Palladium is a banquet hall located in downtown Waco at the corner of Austin Avenue and 8th street where many private and Baylor organizations hold events.
The Baylor Honors College is testing a new program that will benefit both freshmen and upperclassmen.
The new Honor Guide program, which enters the experimental phase this fall, will pair an upperclassman with two to four honors freshman to mentor during the 2012-2013 school year. Only available to honors students, the new program will be announced at the Honors Freshman Assembly at 7 p.m. tonight in Bennett Auditorium. Alamogordo, N.M. senior Allison Harlaine, the president of the Honors Student Advisory Council (HSAC) will make the announcement.
Baylor’s men’s rugby club is in the Allied Rugby Conference, but it belonged to a different conference in 2011.
Last year, the Baylor rugby club was in the Southwest Rugby Conference.
However, Baylor remains on the Southwest schedule, and the league still considers Baylor a member.
Baylor, along with Texas and Sam Houston State, left the Southwest this offseason for the Allied Rugby Conference.
Texas’ and Sam Houston’s resignations from the Southwest were approved by the league, while Baylor’s was not.
Baylor volleyball’s current class of freshmen was rated as the No. 16 recruiting class in the nation by to Prepvolleyball.com.
With the infusion of freshman talent, the team needs veteran leadership to guide it through the grueling season.
Senior setter Kate Harris is the backbone of the team, and the team relies on Harris for her leadership and inspiration.
“She’s the heart and soul of this team,” Baylor head coach Jim Barnes said. “Hard work is her middle name. She’s always the first to practice and the last to leave.”

A recent outbreak of the West Nile virus has occurred in the Waco-McLennan area, resulting in 32 confirmed cases and one confirmed death, according to the Waco-McLennan County Public Health District’s website.
Instead of celebrating their acceptance into Baylor during Welcome Week with a refreshing Dr Pepper float, 10 students decided to celebrate becoming Baylor students with a few drinks, leading to their arrests.
