The apparel design and product development students are preparing to present their clothing at the annual Family and Consumer Sciences fashion show May 5. The Lariat sat down with one of these students, London, UK, senior Helena Stefanowicz. She is graduating in December and is showcasing her senior collection at the fashion show next month. She is one of nine senior designers taking part in the show.

This weekend the Shane Howard Band, a group from Central Texas, will play multiple venues.
They will perform at 8 p.m. Friday at the Slippery Minnow restaurant at 3201 Overflow Rd. at the Lake Waco marina, and then join more than 30 other performers for the event West First, which will take place at 10 p.m. Saturday at the Melody Ranch at 2315 Robinson Drive to benefit those affected by the recent tragedy.
The Baylor Fashion Show will move to the Cashion Academic Center next month. The family consumer sciences department will host its annual fashion show at 3 p.m. on the fifth floor of Cashion on May 5. The event will showcase collections from nine senior design students and an assortment of pieces from underclassmen.
World-renowned drummer Ignacio Berroa will bring the rhythms of his native Cuba to Baylor today. He will join the Baylor Jazz Ensemble for its last concert of the year.
The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Jones Concert Hall in the Glennis McCrary Music Building. There will also be a clinic with Berroa from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. today in 118 Glennis McCrary Music Building. The concert is free and open to the public.
Every performance at Common Grounds is exciting as inspiring musicians around Baylor performs for the crowd of students that sit in the audience to hear Baylor’s finest. This week will have an even more exciting performance.
Beethoven’s immortality will be put on display Saturday night.
The Baylor Symphony Orchestra, the A Cappella Choir, the Concert Choir and the Central Texas Choral Society will combine forces and end the concert season definitively with Ludwig van Beethoven’s colossal Symphony No. 9.
Though many Baylor students may be familiar with the use of Five For Fighting’s song “Chances” in the popular film “The Blind Side,” or have heard the band’s songs “Superman” and “100 Years” coming through their car radio, they can now experience the band live in concert.
At 8 p.m. Thursday on Fountain Mall, Five For Fighting will take the stage as the headlining act for Diadeloso, though Thursday’s weather forecast of the possibility of severe thunderstorms might complicate events.
Lorena sophomore Holly Tucker blew away the judges in the battle rounds of NBC’s “The Voice” Monday, beating teammate and roommate Michelle Raitzin for a spot in the next stage of the competition, the knockout performances.
The battle rounds are the second stage of the competition for “The Voice,” following the blind auditions. If Tucker advances past the knockout rounds, she will compete in the final live performances.

On April 1 the new location opened in a small plaza next to K and S Properties and the House of Healing therapeutic massage parlor just seconds down the street from the H-E-B on 12th Street and Speight Avenue. There will be a grand opening party on Friday for the location. Admission to the party is free and open to the public, but the cupcakes are priced as usual. The local band Sloppy Joe will play at the grand opening from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Former Uproar artist David Dulcie headed to Nashville, Tenn., in July with hopes of making it big in the music industry. During Dulcie’s time at Uproar, he was the lead singer in David Dulcie & The Rag Tag Army. Dulcie graduated from Baylor in May 2012.
The Prohibition era is returning to Baylor through Baylor Opera Theater’s exhibition of the “Underground Opera: The Roaring Twenties,” an event aimed to make opera more audience-friendly.

The polls for the Bracket Battle: Best College Eats championship, hosted by the Cooking Channel, appeared to close early Friday with Vitek’s BBQ Gut Pak leading by 1,000 votes.
The polls were scheduled to close at 4 p.m. Friday. Currently, the Gut Pak has 15,025 votes and its final opponent Marquette’s Real Chili’s The Marquette has 14,035 votes.

When I tried curry for the first time, I was in Ireland. It was at a high priced restaurant in Dublin city center. The whole experience was a night of firsts. I had a lamb curry. Here in the States, lamb is not as accessible on a student budget. But while I was eating the curry, I thought this could easily be done with different kinds of ingredients, much like stir fry. It had its simplicity and the ability to involve any kind of vegetable or meat I wanted. As a college student, this was paramount to me.

Three years after launching the first of five pay-what-you-want cafes, the suburban St. Louis-based chain on Wednesday quietly began its latest charitable venture that takes the concept on a trial run to all 48 cafes in the St. Louis region.
