Who we are
The Baylor Lariat and Lariat TV News is the national award-winning student news organization of Baylor University. We are also one of the oldest student newspapers in Texas — since 1900, The Lariat has provided coverage of breaking news, campus life, Baylor sports and everything in between.

We are a digital-first daily publication that still believes in the power of print media, producing a weekly edition that is available at dozens of stands on and around campus.
We are owned and published by Baylor University, though we are grateful to have an administration that understands the importance of journalistic independence and does not dictate our coverage.

Lariat News
Stories in The Lariat, Lariat TV News and Lariat Radio cover a multitude of topics and breaking stories. We are guided by the principles of newsworthiness, including timeliness, currency, proximity, oddity, impact, human interest and conflict. It is important to note that publication of a story does not equate to endorsement or support of that topic or the people mentioned.

Opinion
The Opinion section of The Lariat contains columns, editorials and letters to the editor. Columns, which staff members are required to write on a rotating basis, express individual opinions and not the opinion of the paper as a whole. However, editorials, which are written by the Editorial Board, are the voice of The Lariat.
Letters to the editor are a way for our readers to respond to columns or editorials or to begin the conversation themselves. There is no guarantee of publication, but we are always happy to hear from you. You can submit a 300-word letter to lariat-letters@baylor.edu

Ethics
The Lariat upholds the standards for journalists set out by the Society of Professional Journalists Code of Ethics. We emphasize the pursuit of truth, journalistic independence, strict adherence to accuracy and the need to handle stories reported on responsibly.

As a news organization, we do not remove stories from our website. However, we always invite feedback and believe that hearing from readers makes us better able to serve our audience. We will make corrections if we are made aware of an error.

AI
We seek to integrate the growing technology into our workflow, increasing efficiency and reporting possibilities while remaining accountable, ethical and creative. Our newsroom restricts dishonest uses of AI without being short-sighted and remains open to AI’s possibilities without being overly permissive.

Journalism is about truth; no use of AI should infringe on that value. Journalists are transparent and accountable; use of AI in a story will be made known.

AI will never be used to compose a story or broadcast package or to generate a photo. It will never be used to fabricate sources.

Acceptable uses of AI include: Transcribing interview audio, Beginning point for research, Demonstrative use (ie; use of AI within a story to illustrate its capabilities. This could include text, video or photo. Demonstrative use will always be made known.)
