The Department of Multicultural Affairs held LatinX Night from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday in the Barfield Drawing Room of the Bill Daniel Student Center. The event mainly included tabling for multiple organizations. However, it also featured free food from Fuzzy’s Tacos and Helados La Azteca, as well as music, dancing and Lotería — a traditional Mexican game.

Other organizations that tabled at the event included the Hispanic Student Association, the Baylor Counseling Center and several multicultural sororities and fraternities, including Kappa Delta Chi and Gamma Alpha Omega.

Fort Worth senior Claudia Victoria, one of three student organizers for the mixer and a Kappa Delta Chi sorority member, said while organizing the night, they paid particular attention to having opportunities to socialize, which is why they included games.

“Making friends that understand your background — I think that is what’s really important for this night,” Victoria said.

Houston senior Dulce Trujillo, another one of the three student organizers for the mixer and a Kappa Delta Chi sorority member, said the biggest part of the event for her was trying to bring the community together and feature Baylor’s Latin representation.

“I wish every student that comes today will find another community, if they already have one of their choice,” Trujillo said. “If not, at least find one that they can be comfortable in … at Baylor.”

San Benito junior Mari Benavides tabled at the event for Baylor Model Organization of American States — a student organization in which members get to research and learn more about Latin American countries. Benavides said the best part of the event was seeing everyone dance.

“It was good to see everybody doing the routines together,” Benavides said.

LatinX Night is one of the four events that make up Mosaic Week, which kicked off with its Mosaic Mixer on Aug. 24. After the Mosaic Mixer, three nights are set aside throughout the week for several ethnic groups to have their own welcome and fair; this includes Black Student Welcome, LatinX Night and Mosaic Asian Night.

Mosaic Asian Night will be at 6 p.m. on Aug. 30 in the Barfield Drawing Room of the Bill Daniel Student Center.
