The Baylor Bears and the Southern Methodist University Mustangs started the game off slow. In fact, the start for Baylor was a complete 180 degree spin from their first game of the season last week against Northwestern State.

In the first quarter, SMU was able to get inside the 10 yard line twice and scored a field goal on each of those two trips into the red zone. To top it all off, the Bears in the first quarter tallied up a total of five penalties and a total of 29 yards racked up in those penalties.

Not only were penalties an issue for Baylor in the first quarter, but third down conversions were also a big issue for Baylor. In the first quarter, Baylor was one for three on third down conversions. Also, the Bears were only accumulated 68 yards of total offense, while SMU grabbed 184 total yards of offense. At the end of the first quarter, the score was 6-0, Mustangs,

The Bears finally got onto the scoreboard at the 13:51 mark of the second quarter with a 35 yard field goal. After that field goal, the Bears started to pick up the tempo a bit. They started being able to move the ball down the field little by little. But, at the 7:50 mark of the game, senior quarterback Seth Russell threw an interception that was almost returned for a pick six. Shortly after that, senior safety Orion Stewart intercepted SMU senior quarterback Matt Davis in the end zone for a touchback. Baylor went down the field and tied up the game with a field goal to make the score 6-6 heading into the half.
