It’s not yet Saturday night, but Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III has already beat out the country’s best quarterbacks to take home some hardware.

Griffin won the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award as announced on ESPN’s College Football Awards Show Thursday night, given to the country’s best quarterback, as voted on by a national selection committee. It’s the first time a Baylor quarterback has won the award and the fourth time a Baylor player has won one of college football’s major awards.

Thomas Everett won the 1986 Jim Thorpe Award as the country’s best defensive back, and Daniel Sepulveda won the 2004 and 2006 Ray Guy Awards for being the nation’s best collegiate punter.

On Saturday, Griffin will attend the Heisman trophy award presentation in New York. The show can be seen on ESPN at 7 p.m.
