The NCAA placed a two-year show-cause order on former Baylor men’s basketball assistant coach Jared Nuness after he admitted to betting thousands of dollars on professional and college sports.

Baylor conducted an internal investigation and turned in its findings to the NCAA in December 2025, beginning a joint investigation. Nuness admitted to violating the NCAA’s rules on sports betting in February 2026.

The NCAA’s report stated that the former Baylor assistant coach placed around 3,400 bets totaling $38,000 from December 29, 2020, through November 28, 2025. He also let his son use his accounts, and his son placed three bets on collegiate sports worth $170 with none of the wagers involving Baylor.

The show-cause order requires Nuness to complete meaningful sports betting education and provide sports betting education to his peers. He will also face a three-game suspension from all athletically related activities as well as public reprimand and censure.

“The NCAA approved a negotiated resolution on sports wagering conduct involving former assistant coach Jared Nuness, who left our staff in December 2025,” Baylor said in a statement. “We cooperated with the NCAA throughout the process.”

Nuness came into the 2025-26 season as the longest tenured assistant, entering his 16th season in head coach Scott Drew’s staff. He stepped away from the program on December 9 “to attend to a personal issue.”

Baylor also stated its compliance education continues across the athletics department, including its work with ProhiBet, a data-sharing platform that prohibits athletes, coaches and league personnel from placing sports bets.
