Texas State shocked Baylor football with an upset win over the weekend, but the Bears know just how tough their next opponent is. The Utes will be rolling into Waco following 10 days of rest to clash with Baylor for a first-ever matchup. Both teams are dealing with injuries to their starting quarterbacks. The Bears will be without redshirt junior quarterback Blake Shapen for two to three weeks with an MCL injury, while Utah is monitoring star senior quarterback Cam Rising’s status.
Head coach Dave Aranda told reporters on Saturday that a QB decision will be made at some point this week.
The Bears wrapped up their first scrimmage of the spring practice slate, and head coach Dave Aranda said he saw good things from both quarterbacks along with several transfers.
The Bears finished their second day of spring practice on Thursday, and assistant coach and quarterbacks coach Shawn Bell embraced the quarterback competition.
Aranda said redshirt junior quarterback Blake Shapen and redshirt sophomore quarterback Sawyer Robertson will be at the forefront of the position battle.
Baylor volleyball hosted the Baylor Classic tournament this weekend at the Ferrell Center in Waco. The Classic consisted of matches against the Tulsa Golden Hurricane, UT-Arlington Mavericks and Mississippi State Bulldogs. The Bears finished with a record of 1-2, with a win against Mississippi State in their final game.
“The early part of the season has been a building process for us,” head volleyball coach Jim Barnes said. “When there are only one or two contributors returning, it’s hard to learn how to play together right away. There is a learning curve.”
Baylor volleyball finished the three match Baylor Classic with a win against the Mississippi State Bulldogs. The Bears won the match 3-1, with sets of 22-25, 27-25, 25-17 and 25-18. The Bears finish up the Classic with a record of 1-2 and with a 2-5 record overall.
Mississippi State was led by freshman opposite hitter Kimmy Gardiner. Gardiner finished with a double-double, 20 kills and 14 digs. Freshman setter Suzanne Horner added 48 assists. Sophomore libero Roxanne McVey finished with 25 digs to lead all players.
Mississippi State and Baylor have agreed to cancel the two remaining basketball games in its contract.
Baylor volleyball went 2-1 on the weekend at the MCM Elegante’ Invitational in Beaumont.
Pushed to the brink of defeat, the 11th-ranked Baylor men’s tennis team battled back to defeat a tough Mississippi State team 4-3 at Baylor Tennis Center on Sunday.
