“The community is just so tight, they have what they call the familia mindset,” she said. “Everyone is just very close knit. They have so many socials and they have so many events that just bring the whole community together.”

The course is not discipline-specific, but “student-specific,” Senior Lecturer of biology and course instructor Tammy Adair said. Though the course is open for any student to register for, the Office of Engaged Learning sends out calls to professors for recommendations in order to select students with interests and ambitions that the course specifically tackles. Many of the students who take it are nominated.
Whether it’s hosting several service days throughout the semester, partnering with nonprofits to spread awareness or creating more service projects for students to participate in, there are so many opportunities for Baylor to highlight the needs of the Waco community.
The LatinX Association for Science and Health is encouraging students to put on their tennis shoes and head to Fountain Mall on Sunday afternoon for a kickball tournament to raise funds for La Puerta, a local nonprofit that provides education to the Hispanic and Latino population in Waco.
