Sports news from The Baylor Lariat.

I’ve been a baseball fan for quite some time now. I’ve heard of every statistic one can imagine, and I agree that just as Billy Beane found out, numbers aren’t everything in baseball. But at least one MLB player this season, in perhaps the weakest decision I’ve seen in a long time, thought one statistic was so important that even dignity was worth losing for it.

Baylor junior Brittney Griner led all scorers in her first international game as the USA Women’s Basketball team surged past its Italian opponent. Griner had 15 points Friday in the 77-48 victory over 2010 Italian league champion Famila Schio in Monte di Procida, Italy. Baylor alumna Sophia Young added eight points to help guide the team to a win in the tournaments’ opening game.

The Bears open Big 12 play on the road against a tough Kansas State squad.

In a game where there figures to be some bad blood, the Bears (9-2-1) will host the Texas Tech Red Raiders (7-3-1) at 7 p.m. today at Betty Lou Mays Field. The Bears are eager to play the Red Raiders, as memories from the day they played Texas Tech in Lubbock last year loom.

Last Saturday, the Baylor defense stepped on the field for Rice’s second drive of the second half with the Bears leading 35-17. Despite the lead, the atmosphere in Floyd Casey Stadium was dead.

With two goals and two assists this season, sophomore midfielder Karlee Summey has taken full advantage of the chance she has been given. Summey has appeared in all 12 games for the Bears and had the game-winning goal 45 seconds into overtime Sunday against Weber State.

Baylor forced five sets against the Aggies Wednesday in College Station but could not come away victorious, losing by a final score of 3-2 (20-25, 25-22, 25-19, 15-25, 5-15).

Junior Lady Bear star Brittney Griner is off to Europe. The players who are participating in the 2011 USA Basketball Women’s National Team European training camp and exhibition games were announced Monday. Griner will join Baylor alum Sophia Young, who currently plays for the San Antonio Silver Stars WNBA team.

Baylor men’s tennis earned both the singles and doubles titles in the 11th annual Baylor-HEB Invitational at the Hurd Tennis Center this past weekend.

A strong 28-0 start by Baylor in Saturday’s game looked to be a blowout. Although Baylor did win big, the Bears made some mistakes that allowed Rice to close the gap to 56-31.

The Baylor soccer team is off to its best start since the 1996 inaugural season, when it raced out to a 10-1-1 start.

After a strong 28-0 start by Baylor made this game look to be a blowout, Rice has reasserted itself with three of the last four scoring drives bringing the score to 35-17.

Baylor’s nonconference schedule will end Saturday with old Southwest Conference rival Rice (1-1).

While the Baylor football team will look to improve its record to 3-0 Saturday against Rice, the Baylor (11-4) volleyball team will be playing their second Big 12 match up against Kansas State (11-3) at 7 p.m. in Manhattan, Kan.

Junior safety Mike Hicks has been one of the prime defensive stars for the Bears this young season. It was Hicks who had the dramatic game-winning interception in the waning seconds of the game against the TCU Horned Frogs on Sept. 2. Hicks also had an interception in Saturday’s 48-0 victory over Stephen F. Austin.

As the ball went over the goalkeeper’s outstretched arms and into the back of the net, junior midfielder Larissa Campos finally had her confidence fully restored. It was a confidence she had been in search of for nearly two full years, battling a long, painful recovery from a torn ACL.

Baylor fans have plenty to follow this weekend as several teams are in action: men’s tennis will be home Friday, Saturday and Sunday for their season opener in the HEB Invitational, women’s cross country competes Friday at the Toledo Inter-Regional Bubble Buster meet in Toledo, Ohio, and on Sunday and Monday, women’s golf will be at the Dick Maguire Invitational tournament in Albuquerque, N.M.

My love relationship with sports began when I was little, dressed in a Michael Jordan jersey seated on my dad’s lap. It has grown over the years as my dad has introduced me to different ones. I remember watching the Cowboys in the late 90’s, sharing the frustrations of my dad with the lack of athletic ability on the field. I remember fighting off sleep as I watched the Dallas Stars win the Stanley Cup in 1999. I remember my first Texas Rangers’ game and the excitement the atmosphere brought.

The Longhorns and the Wildcats are the matchups the Bears will be granted this weekend. Baylor soccer (7-2-1) will continue Big 12 play on the road when it faces the University of Texas Longhorns (6-2) at 7 p.m. today in Austin. Then they will travel back up I-35 to play host to the Weber State Wildcats (2-6) at 1 p.m. Sunday on Betty Lou Mays Field.
