Before Rio in 2016, or even getting started in the pros next summer, there is still the senior season with the Lady Bears for the fun-loving All-American who can dunk and broke her right wrist in a longboarding accident this summer. Baylor is coming off the NCAA’s first 40-win season and returns every starter from its undefeated national championship team.

Moonlight Madness was a success last Friday night. The campus will soon be buzzing with basketball on the horizon, and the teams will look to hang banners in April.

Fans flooded the Ferrell Center for a taste of what they will get when the season starts next month.

“There was a lot of energy, man,” freshman forward Rico Gathers said. “I didn’t expect it to be this live…I can’t wait until the season starts.”

Before Baylor enters the tunnel to run out onto the field at Floyd Casey Stadium, the team hits a sign above the doorway that says “Finish Strong.”

“We aren’t going to put our heads down and throw in the towel,” senior quarterback Nick Florence said. “We still have seven more games left. There is still a lot of football to be played. When it comes to bowls, you are defined by how you finish. We’re going to keep fighting until the end.”

Baylor football fans are feeling a sense of panic this week after the Bears lost 49-21 to TCU on Saturday. I wish I could offer some words of encouragement and tell you that everything will be okay this football season, but some numbers just don’t lie.

Baylor’s defense is one of the worst in all of college football. Of the 124 FBS Division I teams, the Bears defense is ranked 121st in points allowed.

The No. 20 Baylor women’s soccer team had a tough road test this past weekend, taking on the No. 25 West Virginia Mountaineers on Friday night and Oklahoma State on Sunday afternoon.

Road victories are hard to come by in Big 12 play, but the Bears did come away with two draws.

The Bears are now 11-1-4 on the season, and 2-0-3 in Big 12 play.

TCU returns Saturday as a conference rival for the first time since 1997, the year when the Southwest Conference fell apart, and Baylor, Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech began play in the Big 12.

The Trust Fund Tussle is an alternative to the soon-to-come name developed by the student governments of Baylor and TCU for the rivalry between the two schools.

Kansas State at Iowa State: The undefeated No. 6 Wildcats travel to Ames to take on a 4-1 Cyclones team. Kansas State’s offense is nothing flashy, but the ground game of quarterback Collin Klein and running back John Hubert has become a dominant force. Iowa State may be the surprise team of the Big 12. This should be a defensive struggle in a hostile environment, but ultimately Kansas State should prove to be too much for Iowa State. Prediction: Kansas State 27, Iowa State 20

The Baylor volleyball team earned its first Big 12 Conference win on Wednesday night against Texas Tech. After facing four consecutive ranked opponents and starting the season 0-4 in conference, the Bears showed resiliency and earned a victory against Texas Tech at the Ferrell Center.

The No. 20 Baylor women’s soccer team will travel the country roads to Morgantown, W.V. to take on the No. 25 West Virginia Mountaineers.

The Mountaineers are 9-3-3 on the season and 5-0 in Big 12 play. They have not lost a game since Aug 31, but the Bears’ unbeaten streak stretches back to Aug. 26.

The Baylor equestrian team is coming off of a National Championship last season and the win of their first event of the 2012 season, The Willis Invitational. With all of their success, it is only appropriate that Baylor Nation is educated on what exactly it is that the team does. The team rides in both Western and English styles, competing in two events from each category.

Losing in the Elite Eight in two of the past three seasons has left this Baylor men’s basketball team hungry.

The players believe that the program is at a level now where making the NCAA tournament is a given, and tournament runs are expected.

Wednesday marked a monumental day in baseball history. Miguel Cabrera, the Detroit Tigers third baseman, accomplished what baseball players only dream about. He won baseball’s coveted Triple Crown. Cabrera became the first player in forty-five years to accomplish this feat, leading the American League with 44 home runs, a .330 batting average and 139 RBIs.

As a fifth-year senior, Baylor receiver Lanear Sampson has witnessed the transformation of Baylor football first-hand. From the 2008 season when the Bears went 4-8 in head coach Art Briles’ first season to winning 10 games and being Alamo Bowl champs, Sampson has helped usher in a new era of Baylor football.

There are no easy games in conference play.

The No. 25 women’s soccer team has played three conference games so far, and all of them have come down to the wire.

The most recent game was a 3-2 win over Texas Tech to move the team to 11-1-2 overall and 2-0-1 in conference play.

Baylor announced a new multiyear agreement with Fox Sports to televise Baylor athletic events on Fox Sports Network’s platforms, beginning the 2013-2014 school year. The agreement will allow Fox Sports to televise one Baylor football game, all available men’s basketball games and a package of women’s basketball games annually.

After taking a shot to his helmet while scrambling to try to avoid a sack, Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III stayed face-down for a few moments Sunday, then eventually staggered to his feet with what doctors determined was a concussion.

Kansas at Kansas State: This is a highly uneven Sunflower Showdown as No. 7 Wildcats host the Jayhawks in Manhattan. The Wildcats are coming off a monumental road win over Oklahoma and have won 12 straight home games. Conversely, the Jayhawks have lost an astounding 14 consecutive road contests. Kansas has had problems defending the rush, and the Wildcats will be too much for them with Collin Klein, and John Hubert will power the rushing attack to a Wildcats victory. Prediction: Kansas State 42, Kansas 10

The Oakland Athletics captured the AL West with another improbable rally in a season full of them, coming back from four runs down and a 13-game division deficit to stun the two-time defending league champion Texas Rangers 12-5 on Wednesday.

From clinking spurs to pounding hooves, the Baylor equestrian team will be in full force this weekend as it travels to take on Kansas State and Oklahoma State.

“It will be a very full weekend of travel and running around,” head coach Ellen White said. “It is going to be a great time for the girls to get to know each other. One big road trip.”

The competitions this weekend will mark the team’s first Big 12 events of the season.

After the Baylor Lady Bears’ national championship in 2005, the team lost four seniors, two of them starters.

The next season, Baylor fell in the Sweet Sixteen to Maryland 82-63.

Who would have thought that scoring 63 points, aka nine touchdowns, in a single football game would not win?

That happens when the other team, West Virginia in this circumstance, scores 70.

After just one play from scrimmage, the West Virginia defense intercepted senior quarterback Nick Florence’s pass over the middle. The ball hit junior inside receiver Tevin Reese in the hands, but landed in the hands of the Mountaineer secondary.

The Baylor Bears moved to 10-1-2 on Friday night with a 1-0 victory over conference foe Kansas. Baylor is now 1-0-1 in conference play. Senior midfielder Lisa Sliwinski had the only goal of the game.

Baylor @ West Virginia: This is by far the most difficult test the Bears will have faced this season. No. 9 West Virginia has a wildly raucous crowd in Morgantown, and the Bears will be forced to play an early game at 11 a.m. which will be a different experience for them this year. WVU quarterback Geno Smith has already thrown for 1,072 yards this season, and he has accounted for 13 touchdowns. The Mountaineers top offensive playmakers are Tavon Austin and Stedman Bailey, who have 10 total touchdowns and more than 600 yards receiving. Baylor counters with a high-octane offense of its own with Nick Florence spreading the ball to Tevin Reese and Terrance Williams. Ultimately, WVU will be an extreme test for the Bears. Prediction: West Virginia 55, Baylor 38
