In its first weekly meeting this year, the student senate voted unanimously on Thursday to pass both the Delta Tau Delta Traditions Rally Bill and the Education Affordability Act.

The Delta Tau Delta Traditions Rally Bill, authored by Rockwall senior Senator Nick Pokorny, will allocate $10,000 from the Student Government Allocation Fund to the Delta Tau Delta fraternity to pay for the 2012 Traditions Rally musical act, Cory Morrow. Any money not used will be returned to the fund. The bill states the event will be moved to the new Baylor Stadium upon its completion.

Baylor engineering students, in conjunction with the Center for Astrophysics, Space Physics and Engineering Research (CASPER), are in the process of designing a device that will be sent into space in the near future.

Dr. Bill Neilson, a 1976 graduate of Baylor, is also a senior lecturer and clinical professor of decision science in the Honors College. Neilson, who graduated with a degree in chemistry, is a surgeon and longtime health professional with an interest in medical missions.

The Palladium is a banquet hall located in downtown Waco at the corner of Austin Avenue and 8th street where many private and Baylor organizations hold events.

The Baylor Honors College is testing a new program that will benefit both freshmen and upperclassmen.

The new Honor Guide program, which enters the experimental phase this fall, will pair an upperclassman with two to four honors freshman to mentor during the 2012-2013 school year. Only available to honors students, the new program will be announced at the Honors Freshman Assembly at 7 p.m. tonight in Bennett Auditorium. Alamogordo, N.M. senior Allison Harlaine, the president of the Honors Student Advisory Council (HSAC) will make the announcement.

The biology department implemented the new pre-biology designation for most current and future freshmen beginning with the class of 2016. The pre-biology designation is not a major, but an indication that a student is interested in preparing for a major in that area. It functions like the pre-business and pre-nursing designations.

Tuition is rising, but donations are flowing in.

Baylor received a $7 million gift from the estate of Baylor alumnus Richard Goode. The gift will benefit the Richard and Liesel Goode Endowed Academic Scholarship Fund.

It’s a historic, but not unanticipated, move.

In the spring, the Board of Regents announced the appointment of a faculty member, Todd Still, chair of the Faculty Senate, and a student, Student Body President Kelly Rapp, as non-voting members of the Board of Regents. The new regents began serving their one-year terms at the beginning of the fiscal year.

Instead of celebrating their acceptance into Baylor during Welcome Week with a refreshing Dr Pepper float, 10 students decided to celebrate becoming Baylor students with a few drinks, leading to their arrests.

The number of parking spaces may be shrinking, but the prices are going up.

Baylor parking permit fees have risen in the past years, even though Baylor has recently eliminated 100 parking spaces due to the construction along Third Street. Students must now pay $300 for a parking permit for the 2012-2013 year, a 22 percent increase from the $245 permit of the previous year.

‘Where can I put it?’ can be a big question in a small living space like a dorm room. This year, due to a record number of incoming freshman, the question becomes ‘Where can we put them?’

The Baylor volleyball team entered the Fairfield Inn North Baylor Classic with inexperience and questions. After going undefeated in three matches while playing as many as five freshmen at one time, Baylor volleyball has a platform of optimism to build from.

Baylor police have already arrested 10 students for alcohol-related offenses during the first week of school.

“There were 10 in the first week, and so over here during Welcome Week and people moving in, we’ve got folks already learning what the interior of the McLennan County Jail looks like for being publically intoxicated.” said Baylor Police Chief Jim Doak.

A new university vision promises to be the next stepping stone in Baylor’s path to the future.

Pro Futuris, meaning ‘for the future,’ is the name of Baylor’s newest strategic vision, created to guide the university’s path in the coming years, Adopted unanimously by the Baylor Board of Regents on May 11, this vision expands Baylor’s previous long-term plan, Baylor 2012, the university’s strategic vision for a decade-long series of improvements. It began on June 1, and Pro Futuris will be in effect for the next decade.

The Baylor University Board of Regents voted to increase graduate and undergraduate tuition and students fees for the 2013 -2014 school year. The new cost of undergraduate tuition will see a 6.5 percent increase for 12 or more hours.

Although Baylor only played host to a fraction of the total student body during the summer, the campus bustled with activity- construction workers renovating, building and remodeling.

Construction is under way on the new Baylor Stadium after a $35 million contribution from the Waco City Council passed unanimously.
The first vote took place July 17. Both votes unanimously supported contributing the TIF funds which includes the public contribution.
The Waco City Council voted Aug. 7 during a public hearing to provide the Tax Increment Financing Zone funds to the stadium project, which was the second of two required votes.
