Lariat Reporter: Sawyer Smith Steve Forbes, the CEO of Forbes Media, gave advice about Capitalism to students and the public in Dallas on Tuesday evening at Southern Methodist University. The event was sponsored by Young America’s Foundation and carried out by their on-campus student chapter affiliate, Young Americans for Freedom (YAF). The SMU YAF chapter advocates conservative values and principles at their school. With the help of the foundation, student leaders chose Forbes to address “the Superiority of Capitalism” as an economic model. “Free-markets are moral and big government is not,” Forbes said. “On one side there is great philanthropy,…
Yesterday’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling in support of a Texas electoral map system to base the drawing of legislative voting districts on total population, not just registered voters, will not affect plans for the Baylor University College Republicans (BUCR). Club members will make several attempts this month to register students on campus, said Marv Allen, the student group’s communications director and Longview senior. “We are teaming up with Texans for Abbott in a series of Voter Registration drives on campus this semester.” read a post from the BUCR’s Facebook page. The first of three will be Wednesday, followed by April…
Baylor student government will decide Thursday night on a bill seeking to allow religious student organizations to use alcohol for Eucharist on campus. The Baylor Student Organization Policies and Procedures currently prohibit the possession or use of alcoholic beverages on campus or at University-related activities off campus. Support for this bill is based on the many faith traditions within the Christian church that use alcohol for holy communion. Passage of this bill seeks to allow university-sanctioned religious groups who believe in these traditions the opportunity to practice consistently with their Church’s views. San Antonio senior and student senator, Chase Hardy,…
My generation needs to get it together. The problems we face as a country are many, and serious. This is no time to be obsessed with professional sports or reality TV. Absence of mind and understanding applies to all generations to a degree, but the millennial generation controls the future. We are in this mess together, but the perseverance of America rests on individual discipline, responsibility, action and awareness. Don’t take it from me that millennials, generally speaking, are inept and brain dead without basic understandings about U.S. civics, politics, American history and heritage. Just see an easy-make “gotcha” video…
Should the new Baylor Student Body Constitution be ratified this Thursday via online voting, student officer elections will take place on April 7 and 8 instead of Diadeloso, which is on April 12 this year. In the past, these elections have been held every “Day of the Bear,” but this has traditionally left student government little time to transition roles and complete formalities before the end of the school year. “The timeline for elections presented in the new constitution allows enough time for elections, runoffs and swearing in of all newly elected positions to take place before the end of…
DALLAS — Former Virginia Sen. James Webb addressed the World Affairs Council about U.S. foreign policy and American politics in general on Thursday in Dallas. Webb is a recent Democratic presidential candidate who dropped from the race back in October. He has since been considering an independent run for the White House. Webb said at the hosted luncheon that his bid for the presidency as a third party candidate is not going to happen this year. “It seems the funding to make a serious attempt is just not there right now. I have reluctantly concluded this is not the time…
Campus carry bill temporarily invalidated by Student Court after failure to quorum
A large crowd showed up at the Heart of Texas Builders Association on Monday night for a meet and greet with congressman Bill Flores as well as other members of the public. Many people from the McLennan County GOP and Baylor Young Conservatives of Texas group were there to support Representative Flores who will soon be up for reelection, and Colonel Jon Ker who is running as a candidate for Republican Chairman of McLennan County. Most of the night was focused on a short speech from Flores followed by a question and answer session. The U.S. Representative of Texas’ 17th…
Two of Baylor’s political groups have big plans to impact the student body and outside Waco community during this election season. The Young Conservatives of Texas’ Baylor chapter held their first meeting recently. Meanwhile, the Baylor Democrats have also been hard at work on campus. The Young Conservatives at Baylor intend to volunteer heavily for Texas Sen. Ted Cruz’s presidential campaign this semester. Some have already begun regular phone banking for him at a local Waco call center. Being engaged in the grassroots movement for Cruz is only the start of what the Young Conservatives seek to achieve this spring,…
