Many of us desire, directly or indirectly, to change the world in some way. The extent to which we desire change will vary, as will the motivating forces that drive us and the end goals ultimately sought. While one person may feel compelled to write policy reform, another may desire to plan and execute a food drive in their local community. While one may desire to lobby for the coal industry in the name of job creation, another may desire to lobby for the environment in the name of climate change prevention. Changing the world “for the better” can be…

The day after celebrities painted the Golden Globes’ red carpet black in support of the #MeToo and the #TimesUp movements French actress Catherine Deneuve, along with nearly 100 other women, signed a letter denouncing both movements. #MeToo and #TimesUp are movements known for speaking out against sexual assault. The letter, written by five influential and affluent French women, backed the unpopular opinion that the plethora of sexual assault and harassment cases and the subsequent sexual freedom movements are hurting the female population more than helping it. Although the authors of the letter do bring up some valid points about the extent…
When election day comes around, and we pile into our local community centers and school auditoriums to cast our vote, we like to believe that our vote matters. We like to believe we are fulfilling our civic duties and making our voices heard in government. A recent federal court decision in North Carolina works to ensure that this essential element of our democratic republic functions fairly and equitably.Last week, federal judges found North Carolina’s congressional districts map unconstitutional, claiming the map was formed as a result of gerrymandering. Gerrymandering is the technical political term referring to the illegal act of…
By Penelope Shirey | Design Editor Last semester I had the privilege of interning for Southwest Airlines in Dallas. Not only did this give me the incredible opportunity to learn from some of the top professionals in the communication field, but it also taught me lessons that stretched me as a person even outside the office. Living the Southwest way, I learned, does not stop when you leave the walls of headquarters. In fact, some of the my biggest opportunities for growth were not at my desk, but rather while traveling. Interns are eligible for unlimited free flights on Southwest,…

By Alishia Griffin | Contributor As I prepare to leave Baylor Nation this December, I find myself worried about remaining and future peers. Perhaps I’m a stranger to them, but we share an academic community built on Christian faith, therefore we’re all Bears, and I hope that’s enough for you to heed my concerns. In September, Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos made changes to Title IX that mainly affected campus assault cases, leading me to wonder how Baylor’s Title IX office would handle these adjustments in 2018. After all, our school went from being written about as a university known…
By Na’Caesa Pink | Contributor With the steady pace and significant impact social media has brought into the 21st century, it was naive to believe that it could merely exist judgment free. It is undoubtedly known that the internet, along with social media, has rapidly developed and flourished in the last two decades. This spike in social media usage resulted in an increase in dissatisfaction toward social media and is commonly deemed addicting and depersonalizing by older generations. Recent months have shown the complete opposite. Social media has connected the world in more ways now, than anytime before. Within a…
By Brennan Butcher | ContributorThe House of Representatives just passed the GOP’s new tax plan that includes billions in cuts from corporations and wealthy businesses. Without this source of revenue, other groups will be hit hard. Among these groups are college students, their parents and anyone who holds student loan debt. The American Council on Education estimates that the House’s new tax plan will reduce tax benefits and savings for college students by $65 billion over the next 10 years. The purpose of this tax plan is to alleviate the financial pressure on the middle class; however, with the effects felt…
By Molly Freudenberger | Contributor The homeless community in Waco should be celebrated rather than ignored and forgotten by Baylor’s students, faculty and staff. I have noticed that our university has been nicknamed the Baylor Bubble for students who do not wish to live outside of campus. Although this provides safety and comfort for all students, it is also a way to shut out the rest of the Waco community. The problem is that some students are ignorant of an entire homeless community that lives outside the boundaries of Baylor’s campus. It is common for young people to pass by…
Sexual assault is a term that so many of us are way too familiar with at this point. Headlines flashing across our screens are no longer shocking, but receive a shoulder shrug as a reaction. We say “Who now?” rather than “Oh my, no way!” With all of these accusations coming out, especially against powerful men, we cannot accept some of these behaviors as common. We cannot keep shrugging our shoulders and taking sexual assault accusations as “just another one.” We need to hold these people just as accountable for inappropriate behavior, even if they’re famous.Starting with sexual assault accusations…
The Baylor Chapter of the American Scientific Affiliation will host a pro-life Q&A panel titled “Does Life Matter?” from 7 to 8 p.m. Nov. 29 in 100 Morrison Hall. The panel will answer the audience’s toughest pro-life questions from both a Christian and secular perspective. The decision to abort a child is a tragic decision, often made in the midst of very difficult and unanticipated circumstances. To help women consider all their options and the consequences of deciding to abort a child, way before such a decision is faced (hopefully never), the Baylor Chapter of the American Scientific Affiliation has put together a…
Mass incarceration in the land of the free is a problem that is only getting worse. In 1999, Sharanda Jones began her life sentence for her first non-violent criminal offense for the conspiracy to traffic cocaine. Forgotten and without a voice, Jones adapted to life in prison for 17 years until President Barack Obama pardoned her in December 2015. Jones is just one example of half of the U.S. prison population who are behind bars because of drug-related crimes with drawn out sentences. In an overcrowded incarceration system, policies need to take place to reverse a system that disadvantages large…

By Lizzie Darwin | ContributorAfter going through phases through the past couple of months of, “Do they like me, do they like me not?” I finally came to the conclusion that yeah, the people we seek approval from, are not worth it. My entire life I worried about losing people because they think I’m weird, annoying or simply because they do not like me. Let me give it to you straight: people who leave you are not worth your time. Spending the majority of my time worrying if my friends were mad at me, if a boy likes me back…
Adoption is an excellent way for children not only to get a home, but to get a life. Starting this year, President Donald Trump has declared the month of November to be National Adoption Awareness month. During this month, we celebrate the families that have grown through adoption and the children that are still waiting to be adopted. Every year, thousands of families adopt children to be part of their lives. Adoption is a gift that enriches the life of a family, and also the life of the child.”This month, let us celebrate the gift of adoption,” Trump said in…
Thanksgiving hopefully is a time filled with family, friends, good food and of course, thankfulness. Our gratitude for the abundance of blessings we all have should, at least for the moment, outweigh whatever problems and complaints we may have. But, life is messy and complicated, and it can be easy to fall into the trap of forgetting what the holiday is about or only harvesting a spirit of thankfulness for a few moments while posting on social media. While it may not seem like it, we do all have so much to be thankful for. For some of us it…

The news industry has historically been one that always seems to fall into bad light. From sleazy journalists who disobey laws to get stories, to straight-up liars putting out fake news, journalism habitually gets stuck with a bad reputation. In the 21st century, a time when social justice can be expressed in a mere 280-character tweet, changes are happening in the blink of an eye. Now more than ever, people have the power and the resources to see something, then say something. Women march for gender equality, people of color march for racial justice and immigrants march for cultural appropriation.…
Turkeys and mashed potatoes and stuffing, Oh My! The holiday season is filled with family traditions and friendly events, many of which revolve around the consumption of large quantities of food. Between copious amounts of Halloween candy, Thanksgiving dinners and Christmas feasts, food is incredibly plentiful from October to January. For many, these celebrations are a time to enjoy the cuisine and company of the ones they love. However, for one of the 10 million females and one million males in the United States that currently struggle with eating disorders, according to Eating Disorder Hope, a resource for those suffering…
The citizens of Flint, Mich. continue to live without a clean water supply more than a thousand days after the initial lead poisoning crisis.Flint’s City Council was given until Oct. 23 to decide on a long term water supply, but the council asked for more time; Nov. 20 is the new deadline for the people of Flint, and a decision cannot wait any longer. The rest of the country should learn from the mistakes of Michigan’s past as research continues to come to light, and hopefully the country can also learn from the correct decisions for Michigan’s future, which need to…
One of the best parts of the holiday season is the spirit of giving. During this special time of the year, we feel a need to give back to others and make sure that everyone feels special. As important as it is to give to others during this holiday season, we must be careful who we donate to. Sadly, there are organizations that try to take advantage of those who are trying to do a good deed by donating to them. To avoid this, be sure that you are donating to a worthy and real cause. A way that you…
It’s that time of year again — when the feel-good warm fuzzies you and your roommate used to have might feel like they’re starting to fade away. The dishes are lingering a bit longer in the sink, the trash pile seems to be growing exponentially each day and even though the shower water is pooling at your feet, no one wants to step up and pull the hair out of the drain. Having a roommate is tough, but it’s something we all will probably have to go through in our lives at one point or another, especially while in college.…
We have a gun violence problem in this country –– we think that is an undeniable fact. Two of the five most deadly mass shootings in modern U.S. history have happened this year. Three of the top five mass shootings in modern U.S. history have occurred in the last 17 months. There is a reason why the Onion article titled “No Way To Prevent This,’ Says Only Nation Where This Regularly Happens,” circulates so often. Mass shootings have risen dramatically since the Columbine High School shooting in 1999. A report released by the FBI in 2014 found that, excluding shootings…
