Goals were plentiful for Baylor’s women’s soccer team Sunday afternoon. The Lady Bears moved to 2-0 on the season with a 5-0 win over the Northwestern State Lady Demons. “I wanted to see maturity in my team,” head coach Marci Jobson said. “[We wanted] to be able to come out against a team that we should be able to beat. I think they did that.” The Lady Bears started the first half strong. They recorded 12 shots before the Lady Demons could possess the ball in their attacking third of the field. Baylor was especially strong from set pieces. They had multiple opportunities from free kicks, but Northwestern State goalkeeper Brooke Bourbonaid continued to come up with saves.
Freshman defender Katie Daigle recorded the first goal of the day 28 minutes into the game. Daigle volleyed the bouncing pass across her body. Bourbonaid couldn’t change directions fast enough, and Baylor was on the board. Freshman forward Jordan Hatler assisted on the play. With about two minutes left in the half, the Northwestern State defense mishandled a bouncing pass into the box. Junior forward Alex Klein took a chance on an empty goal, but the Lady Demons came up with the stop.
As the halftime whistle sounded, the Lady Bears had a 1-0 lead. They took 18 shots while Northwestern State had yet to threaten goal. Junior midfielder Karlee Summey led the way in the first half with four shots. Baylor opened the second half with much of the same. They put four shots towards the net, but had nothing to show for it. In the 55th minute, Baylor earned a corner kick. Junior forward Vic Hoffman crossed it inside of the six-yard box. Junior defender Kat Ludlow bullied her way through the Lady Demon defenders and headed the ball across the line to record Baylor’s second goal. In the 63rd minute, junior midfielder Larissa Campos hit the ball from about 25 yards out. The ball floated in the air just long enough to escape the reach of the goalie. “I had been working on taking a lot of outside shots. Not a lot has been clicking for me this season, so it was good to finally get one under my belt,” Campos said. “I think we did exactly our game plan, and that’s really positive for our team.” Klein scored her second goal of the season in the 72nd minute.
She took advantage of a through-ball from sophomore midfielder Alexa Wilde and beat the keeper to the near post to boost Baylor’s lead to 4-0.“I’ve just been really lucky. It’s the people who do the plays before me. I’ve just been in the right spot,” Klein said. “Alexa totally played a beautiful pass in. I just toe kicked it, but it was all of the work before that that made the goal.” With a minute remaining in the game, senior forward Michelle Hagen connected on a cross to put the Bears ahead 5-0. Hatler recorded her second assist of the game on the play. Baylor will next head to California to take on Cal State Northridge on Friday.
