It’s not every day the Heart O’ Texas Fair & Rodeo comes to town, and it’s not every day you get to try a deep fried brownie. However, from Oct. 8-18 at the Extraco Events Center, the world is your fried oyster with over 20 food vendors to choose from.

To narrow down your search a bit, we have reviewed a few items from the fair.

    Jalapeno Lemonade

This unusual combo was sweet but still brought a spicy kick once it entered the mouth. For $6, it was also a pretty good price compared to other lemonades.

At its core, it was simply lemonade with a kick, perfect for lovers of sweet and spicy and especially for lovers of the two combined.

    Strawberry Lemonade

Unlike the jalapeño lemonade, this flavor pretty sweet. The lemonade was very tasty.

Despite having a large chunk of lemon in it, the lemonade was mostly sweet, which is ideal for those who prefer sweet over sour. The sweetness of strawberry contrasted perfectly with the subtle tart lemon. Plus, it came in a souvenir cup.

    Fried Oreos

Any fairgoer knows that these events are serious about frying just about anything. As far as fried Oreos go, these were pretty great. They were warm, soft and had the perfect amount of powdered sugar.

    Funnel Cake

Funnel cake is a fair classic that we had to try. While there were a flavors to choose from, we went with the classic funnel cake dusted with powdered sugar.

The cake was lovely, perfectly crunchy and simultaneously soft. The powdered sugar was, of course, delightfully sweet. If you are making a stop at the fair, definitely drop by the funnel cake stand.

Deep Fried Brownie and Ice Cream

Picture this: chocolate brownie on the inside surrounded by fried chocolate and topped with powdered sugar.

The only problem was the popsicle stick in the middle making it hard to eat with the ice cream. However, once you take a bite, you will soon forget the struggle it took to combine it with the ice cream. The brownie was rich, soft warm and perfectly dense, and the cold ice cream complemented it perfectly. The fried outside added a subtle crunch and a unique taste. The best comparison for this brownie is chocolate lava cake or mug cake, but neither of these feature that perfect fried outside.

    Fried Mozzarella Cheese

As far as mozzarella sticks go, these were pretty standard. The seasoning added the perfect savory taste, however, and the cheese was wonderfully stretchy.

However, one of our sticks came out apparently devoid of cheese. Other than that piece, however, the fried mozzarella cheese was great.

For those wanting to try these tasty treats, tickets are available through Sunday at the Heart O’ Texas Fair website.
