    With the first week of classes almost out of the way, it’s time to put down the syllabi and take a breather. Here are some local events to try out before your classwork gets too crazy.

    Dear Evan Hansen | Aug. 28-30 | Times vary | Waco Civic Theatre, 1517 Lake Air Drive | $30 tickets | Catch the Waco community in Waco Civic Theatre’s production of this Tony Award-winning musical before it’s over.

    Pecos & the Rooftops | Aug. 28 | 8:30 p.m. | The Backyard Bar Stage and Grill, 511 S. Eighth St. | $24.57 General Admission | Jam to some live country-rock music at The Backyard with Lubbock band Pecos & the Rooftops.

    Giovannie and the Hired Guns | Aug. 29 | 8:30 p.m. | The Backyard Bar Stage and Grill, 511 S. Eighth St. | $29.88 General Admission | For more live rock, join Giovannie and the Hired Guns at The Backyard. According to their website, the Texas band offers sound from alt-metal, country, Latin pop, Americana and more.

    Waco Downtown Farmers Market | Aug. 29 | 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. | Bridge Street Plaza, 200 E. Bridge St. | Pull up to the farmers market this Saturday for a variety of vendors and food trucks. Since 2011, this farmers market has offered all sorts of snacks year-round.

    Splashdowns & Touchdowns | Aug. 29 | 12:30-5 p.m. | Hawaiian Falls, 900 Lake Shore Drive | Free with paid admission | Beat the heat by watching college football from Hawaiian Falls’ Breaker Bay wave pool.

    LEGO Brick Convention | Aug. 29-30 | Times vary | BASE at Extraco Events Center, 4601 Bosque Blvd. | $15 plus taxes and fees online, $20 at the door | Lego lovers, go let your inner child out to enjoy this event. This convention features Lego displays, vendors, photo ops and more.

    Adult Skate Night | Sept. 3 | 8-10:30 p.m. | Skate Waco, 401 Towne Oaks Drive | $10 | If schoolwork has you stuck and you’re looking for a way to blow off steam, glide over the Skate Waco for adult skate night. Grab your friends, strap on some skates and roll your worries away.
