For this week’s Tunesday, we’ve got everything from rap, to indie-pop, to R&B and more. So pop in those airpods (or put on those headphones) and dig into a smorgasbord of specially selected new songs.
“To Get Better” by Wasia Project (August 29)
This melancholy tune, performed by musical sibling duo Will Gao and Olivia Hardy, is my favorite off of their new album, “Isotope.” This song gives the sense of slowly spinning out of control, but in a cool, dark and mysterious way, if that’s even possible. Wasia Project has outdone themselves again with an album that stands out from most other alternative/indie selections on the market, with their tasteful hints of jazz worked into their songs.
“DENIAL IS A RIVER” by Doechii (August 30)
Doechii’s single “NISSAN ALTIMA” is undoubtedly the most recognizable from her recently released album, “Alligator Bites Never Heal” due to it’s virality on TikTok. However, “DENIAL IS A RIVER” is a track that really demonstrates some of Doechii’s savage lyricism and creativity from her earlier days in the rap game. She turns what was probably a very upsetting situation into a bop with her good humor and ability to produce a catchy beat. I also appreciated the numerous audio samples throughout the album, which just screams “Doechii,” and has ever since “Yucky Blucky Fruitcake” in 2020.
“My Girl” by Coco & Clair Clair (August 30)
One type of music I’ve really been enjoying recently, thanks to the comeback of club music, has been anything within the dreamwave/electronica genre, which is why “My Girl” by Coco & Clair Clair caught my ear. This track off their new “Girl” album encapsulates the nature of their friendship: inseparable and loyal to no end. While this song isn’t necessarily inventive lyrically, it has me feeling like I’m walking down a runway every time I listen.
“Three Little Birds “ by John Legend (August 30)
This cover of the iconic Bob Marley hit brings a little cheer and innocence to this week’s Tunesday. The album, titled “My Favorite Dream,” was written for his wife and kidsin which he finds his “joy and “inspiration,” according to John. So to all those freshmen out there who’ve just floundered through their first week of school — “Every little thing is gonna be alright!”
