Let’s each decide when to celebrate Christmas

When do we start celebrating the most wonderful time of the year? Some people think to begin the day after Halloween, while others argue to wait until the day after Thanksgiving. So what is the right answer to this debate? Or is there one?

First, waiting for Thanksgiving to end would be something I would do if I were American. I do not have this problem because I am Canadian and my typical Thanksgiving is on the second Monday of October. Therefore, the debate to wait until after Thanksgiving does not apply to me.

Honestly, I begin celebrating as soon as possible — meaning that once Halloween is done, I am cranking up the Christmas music, because why wait to decorate for Christmas when you don’t have to? However, I do hold back from doing complete decorations and Christmas traditions until a later date.

The reason why I wait to fully commit to decorating, making Christmas cookies and fully embracing all the Christmas traditions is that I think it is also appropriate to wait until Remembrance Day (Veterans Day) is done. Personally, this shows respect for the lives lost in the past. After this day, though, Christmas music is played on the radio and society as a whole starts to celebrate.

While this debate is long overdue, people have many firm arguments for why they begin celebrating when they do. For example, some people put more value into different holidays, and since Christmas is one of the biggest and most celebrated holidays, it’s common to disagree on when to start. It is no wonder why people want all the merry and bright feelings that Christmas brings, but Thanksgiving also provides warm and welcoming feelings.

There are many reasons why people should wait until after Thanksgiving to celebrate. This holiday is just as important as any other and gives people the opportunity to show their thankfulness to others. It’s an important day to give thanks and appreciate our blessings, which is why Christmas should be celebrated after Thanksgiving.

Christmas is fun, memorable and definitely the most wonderful time of the year. However, I think it is important to value and show appreciation to all the holidays we are given. While I believe that Christmas is an exciting holiday, it is important to celebrate other holidays with the same amount of passion — we can just start with Christmas as soon as possible.
